questionmark Posted October 6, 2012 #1 Share Posted October 6, 2012 Georgia Rep. Paul Broun said in videotaped remarks that evolution, embryology and the Big Bang theory are "lies straight from the pit of hell." The Republican lawmaker made those comments during a speech Sept. 27 at a sportsman's banquet at Liberty Baptist Church in Hartwell. Broun, a medical doctor, is running for re-election in November unopposed by Democrats. During the remarks, Broun said that he believes the Earth is about 9,000 years old and that it was made in six days. Those beliefs are held by fundamentalist Christians who believe the creation accounts in the Bible are literally true. Read more

Wickian Posted October 6, 2012 #13 Share Posted October 6, 2012 There should be a rule that you must swear to God that you do you believe in creationism before you get into any kind of government committee that has anything to do with science or involves understanding it. ranrod Posted October 7, 2012 #20 Share Posted October 7, 2012 Sadly, I don't think it's simply pandering. I think he believes it. The congressman might believe in the Judeo-Christian god, he might even be a genuine creationist, but his statement was definitely designed to pander to his audience. Sadly, you can run for office having little experience, smarts or qualifications but quoting fundamentalist beliefs helps your chances significantly in many regions of this country. In those same regions you can be completely qualified - the ideal candidate - but an atheist, and thus not have a snowball's chance in hell. questionmark Posted October 7, 2012 Author #23 Share Posted October 7, 2012 How does one come to be on the House and Science Committee? You need to scream the loudest about it and most of all don't have to know a s**t about science. Having flunked both math and science in high school is a good way to get there.
