Return of 'third class' rail travel proposed

11 posts in this topic

Rail companies are drawing up controversial plans for officially sanctioned 'third class' travel, a senior Government figure has admitted.

Earl Attlee admitted the Department of Transport was considering the proposal, which was ditched in Britain by the former nationalised British Rail in June 1956.

It has sparked a new class-war row in the wake of Chancellor George Osborne's recent spat after he sought a place in First Class after buying only a standard class ticket.

So he paid for "coach" and wanted first class? With airfare that amounts to a savings of about 80% for a plush, pampered ride. Where do I sign up?

Oh he didn't just 'want' First Class, he just parked himself in a First Class carriage and refused to move!

Don't be surprised if you have to pay extra for a strap, or even have to bring your own along :hmm:

I thought we already had it in having to stand for an entire journey due to overcrowding/underseating

British trains are a 3rd class system of travel anyway. They are very rarely on time. Cancel at the slightest excuse, and are generally not clean, inside or out. Lord Beeching has a lot to answer for.At least the Road Coach transport gets you there, and is not as expensive.
