I was initially intrigued by the crow. Its pure white, and has blue eyes .

When I researched a bit more,I found that there can be a link between radiation ,and albinism instances occurring .

Apparently ,Japan has had a huge jump in albino animals, and even plants ,in the last year ,which was also seen in the Ukraine, after Chernobyl.

Crows in Japan ,look like what we would call a raven ,in the USA .Our crows are much smaller.

You hear them early in the morning, all over the city ,cawing ....loud .Some parts of Tokyo have hundreds of them .

They can be up to two and a half feet long ,from beak to tail .

I go to a park in a place in Tokyo called kichijoji .

It's famouse for the koi in the pond .

You can buy bread to feed them ,at little stalls just outside the park .

All parks have these crows .

I love to go feed the koi there, but the crows there are aggressive . I've had food in my hand that I'm eating, ans had one come by and snap it out of my hand with their beak ,which is big and sharp.

They can be intimidating . This one is awesome ,but its sad if its a result of bad mutations .

That is one out of how many crows. Doesn't seem to be a trend. Pretty though.

Here is an example of a nearly completely white young American Crow photographed by Maxine and Jim Harwood of Piedmont, albino2a.jpgOhio, June 1998. It was a recently fledged youngster. The Harwoods report seeing two white crows the next day, probably this one and a sibling.

Notice on the one picture that the back is not completely dark. Also, despite the red from the flash, the iris was not pink, but was normally pigmented with blue-gray

Nice one Darkwind. Similar to the white tigers I guess, both aren't albino just a different gene is standing out.

I couldn't find any link between radiation and albinism when I searched. Every site I read states that albinism is hereditary. The fact that the crow is white, yet has blue eyes is considered a partial albino.

This is a request from University of South Carolina asking for others to report to them any abonormalities they see in any animal or insect near Fukushima.

Chernobyl Abnormalities

And from the same page is a link to a study.

ALBINISM AND PHENOTYPE OF BARN SWALLOWS (HIRUNDO RUSTICA) FROM CHERNOBYL.

Albinism in animals happens, and has happened for a long time. It's rare but hardly unheard of. A hell of a lot more testing will need to be done before this can be remotely linked to radiation troubles.

Now when a cow starts shooting lasers from its eyes, then we'll talk.

There are no instances of white crows or crabs in Japan . I could look ,but I know it won't be there ,except the two noted here.

The Japanese document this kind of stuff .

I dont there are any ,even from Hiroshima and Nagasaki .

The general consensus is ,albinism jumps 15% ,after an insident of radiation .

That is not what the study said.

Barn swallows from Chernobyl had a temporally constant, elevated frequency of partial albinism compared to the situation before radioactive contamination and compared to birds from a control area.

Sorry, going to go with the scientists on this one, as usual.

There may be a link with radiation, but there have been pure white crows and ravens all over the world for ages.

It appears to be a spontaneous mutation, and has nothing to do with albinism.

And there are partly white crow species: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pied_Crow

.

Fascinating and beautiful.

Are there any traditions or superstitions linked to White Crows in Japanese Culture?
