Still Waters Posted November 26, 2012 #1 Share Posted November 26, 2012 Thomas the tortoise has survived two World Wars, a blast from a German bomb during the Blitz, and 32 prime ministers. Born when William Gladstone was in Downing Street and Queen Victoria was on the throne, the animal is now celebrating its 130th birthday. The longevity of the Hermann’s tortoise is all the more remarkable as it had to be pulled from the rubble of a house during the Blitz in the Second World War, but went on to see in another seven decades and counting. http://www.telegraph...h-birthday.html

TheLastLazyGun Posted November 27, 2012 #3 Share Posted November 27, 2012 (edited) He's almost as old as Menzies Campbell, the former leader of the Liberal Democrats. Here are some things which happened in 1882, the year that Hermann was born: 2nd March: Roderick Maclean fails to assassinate Queen Victoria. 3rd April: Outlaw Jesse James is shot in the head and killed by Robert Ford. 19th April: Charles Darwin dies. 4th September: Thomas Edison flips the switch to the first commercial electrical power plant in history, lighting one square mile of lower Manhattan. 13th September: Egypt becomes part of the British Empire during the Anglo-Egyptian War. 16th November: Royal Navy warship HMS Flirt destroys an Abari village in Niger. 6th December: The last transit of the planet Venus until 2004 occurs.
