Greece Plunges in Global Corruption Rankings

26 posts in this topic

Adding to its numerous woes, Greece has plunged in this year's corruption rankings, issued annually by Transparency International. The country is now ranked as the EU's worst in the battle against graft. Perennial bottom feeders Bulgaria and Romania, by contrast, have shown improvement.

The bottom and top of the list are hardly surprising. Once again, Transparency International's Corruption Perception Index found that Somalia, North Korea and Afghanistan are the most corrupt countries in the world, with New Zealand, Denmark and Finland to be found on the opposite end of the spectrum.

In between, however, there has been plenty of movement. And countries in the European Union, particularly some within the euro zone, have not exactly improved when it comes to combating corruption. Greece, in particular, slid several spots in this year's ranking from the already weak position it occupied in 2011, plunging from 80th on the list in 2011 to 94th this year.

"Underperformers in the Corruption Perceptions Index 2012 … include the euro-zone countries most affected by the financial and economic crisis," the NGO points out in a statement on its website accompanying the report's Wednesday release. "Transparency International has consistently warned Europe to address corruption risks in the public sector to tackle the financial crisis."

Not surprising, as is that the "Damn Socialists" (New Zealand, Denmark and Finland) are ahead again!

Edit. And the map:

The date set to start forming the United Nations of Europe from the Telegraph is interesting though. It states that with the power of full banking union and authority over every member, it will start to take place through a series of treaties after 2014. (I told you so)

I am amazed of your capability of predicting lately what European politicians have been planning since 1956.

This was probably the biggest surprise to me. I had not heard about this yet in Ireland.

Glad to see NZ at the opposite end of the scale and i notice it in my business dealings overseas as well. Even dealing with some Australian QS's, they will ask for certain amounts of money to be transfered into their accounts if they award you the contract, which we always decline. Why would anyone want to do business with someone who is so obviously corrupt?

I didnt realise there were countries below Greece lol

As for socialists have a look at the nations before making wild claims. They are resource rich.

So are most African countries, what is their excuse?

Edit, and Denmark #1 in the Ranking, has absolutely no mentionable resources.

Really? Well, maybe that's one of the reasons, that led these 2 countries (Ireland and Greece) to this situation.Someday this problem would be popped out and unfortunately it popped out with the worst way possible (referring to the financial crisis)

Corrupt property deals and back handers to politicians and planners was the main cause of the financial crisis in Ireland.

Unfortunately the Irish have a very unhealthy disrespect for the law and always believe that this will work to their ultimate advantage - they were wrong.

Presumably you are implying some sort of link!! i.e socialists are in some way morally superior. Give me a while & i'll find a dozen or so stories about corrupt labour councils & councillors.

There is a frequent claim made by Right Wing thinkers that any form of social democratic model cannot function as well as a free market neoliberal model. That is blatantly a false assumption when you look at countries like Germany, New Zealand, Norway and Finland.

I think that was the point been made here.

Cool..

I like it when New Zealand comes out on top in a good way..

But I tend to think we're pretty corrupt as well.. the SFO (Serious fraud Office) has been busy of late..

We have a fair share of top-end business corruption, but little if any outside of the boardrooms..
