Hearing voices?

22 posts in this topic

Hey, so this all started when i was sick about three weeks ago-i had some cold and i took a medicine and i started hearing voices as i went to bed at night. I feel like I've heard them before as i was growing up i just cant remember them clearly. But anyways the voices didn't really scare me much, i thought they were interesting. I even got to the point where i would take a nap during school and channel them so i could hear them. I could also influence what they said, and that is the only time i could remember what they said. I thought about someone that i'm not particularly fond of and a guys voice said destruction, and then i thought about one of my guy friends and it was a girl screaming out saying that "I don't want him"-her talking about she doesnt want him in my life(?) or something like that. Then my friends joked around one day about skezephernia and thats when i got scared. So we asked one of my dad's friends who was a doctor and he said it was because of the medicine i was taking-apparently it was narcotic so i stopped taking it and for a few days i stopped hearing them but recently I've started hearing them again, at first i thought it was because i had been getting sick again so i took a dose of the previous drug that was narcotic and made me hear the voices, knowing that i could deal with them now, but that was last week and i'm still hearing them. THe only difference is they aren't yelling at me anymore, which is definitely a plus, and occasionally i'll hear and kind of see something happen. I know i'm not dreaming but i can kind of see whats happening as the sounds are going on. For example, last night there was a black briefcase or something being slammed on a table twice and i knew what happened. I don't know how to explain it but oh well. I definitely still hear the voices i just cant remember them which bothers me because i want to know what they said Last night when i heard the brief case there was a lady who commented about it afterwards but of course i don't remember. I've told my parents about it but i think i am making it up. Which that doesn't bother me either-its life, and they probably think im just overexxagerating, which i know im not. I told my teacher i heard them while i was praying at night and they would throw my focus off and id start seeing what i was praying about and she mentioned that it may be the devil trying to get to me so the last couple nights i made myself stay awake while i was praying and i still heard them. Please let me know if you guys have any insight!!!

Definately.

Auditory hallucination can be a symtom of illness. Some people are very sensitive to ingredients found in common cold medicines.

First rule out the physical and mental, then go to the metaphysical.... after you know you aren't sick physically or mentally. Could be nothing more than a hormone imbalance and at your age, it's very likely...

Sounds like it could also just be Hypnagogia - which is a completely normal thing to experience especially while on the verge of falling asleep and/or waking up. Some people hear snippits of conversations or names, some people see things. Some people experience both.

The medicine you were taking could have possibly intensified it if this is the case.

I'll check it out but i really don't think I'm sick. You guys are telling me to see a doctor but the thing is they aren't bothering me, i just want to know why. and i guess it may be the Hypnagogia, which i'll look at in a second, but i'm not sick-they aren't telling me to kill myself or anything of that sort.

If the voices aren't bothering you that much then I'd suggest just listening in.. It sounds to me like your experiencing something like Clairaudient Hypnagogia, which is nothing to worry about.. I experience this from time to time with Meditation, so when voice do come I actually find it very interesting, and not disturbing in any way.. Sometimes it's very interesting and insightfull to hear these things.. Sometimes ot can be down-right hillarious.. The seeing (briefcase) is i believe part of the Hypnagogia. That can get very interesting, but is nothing to be afraid of.

If it bothers you, talk to a doctor.. But I wouldn't stop taking any medications on anyones advice other than your Doctor.

Oh, and welcome to UM!

This is dead on.

A couple of questions.

How much video games are you playing?

How are you seeping? Are you staying up late at all?

Are there other stresses in your life?

You should have your parents have a sleep study done. My guess is that somehow you have low iron obsorbtion. But your regular doctor may not know this the neurologist will. Most likely you will end up on a liquid iron supplement.

Have a sleep study done. Tell your parents you are haveing hypnagogic hullucinations, and you need to see a doctor for a sleep study. Your sickness and consequent medication may have thrown something off.

Don't wait.

In the mean time, if your visions are disturbing you, you are welcome to pm me or post here, and I will help you work through them.

Yes, I do play a good amount of video games, i usually stay up pretty late, and im not really stressing much. Its finals but the tests aren't stressin me out much. I told my parents today and they don't think anything of the voies -they think I'm fine so i guess we'll see where it goes from here.

Ok... This is part of the problem the late nights and video games is messing with your REM sleep. Especially if it's been going on for a while. It's starting to catch up with you. I suggest you make an effort to put the games away much earlier and make a habit of going to bed earlier.... Getting a good 3-5 mile or more run in every day will help you a lot aswell. If it persists or gets worse, you may need to still see a sleep specialist.

Are you over weight at all?

Hi,

I am telepathic. Your story truly resonates with me.

I like the idea that you choose to channel these voices. There is no need to be fearful or offended by the beliefs of others.

My question is "what exactly would you like to know about this?"

Thanks,

John

The only problem is that nowadays he or she could very well enter a doctors office, tell what happened briefly, and walk out of the room with a prescription sheet of paper for 2 different anti-psychotics, 2 anti-depressants, and a bottle of anti-anxiety meds for good measure. It's obscene.

This all happens in the magical in-between twilight state of waking and sleep. It is normal, definitely not fodder for psychological treatment. Give me a break.

I can say this with experience. See a doctor you trust, immediately. Describe your symptoms and thoughts clearly, simply and logically. Check your physical and mental health, even if you are scared of what you might find out.

This could be anything from a brain tumour, to a mental illness, through to a physical result of an allergy, reaction, or environmental cause.

The thing is to ensure your health first. Once you know you are well, you can investigate the voices without concern or fear, and take the time to experiment and use logical deduction to find their cause and purpose. You aren't a doctor and are not qualified to say if you are ill or not. Just because the experiences do not worry you, does not mean they are necessarily physically benign or harmless. High blood pressure can kill you, without you feeling the slightest physical effect before it does.

My response above is based on the Ops comments that these are not dream events but occuring in the waking world as hallucinatory events. That seems to be confirmed by the doctors reference to a drug based cause.

While all sorts of thngs happen in the dream state without any cause for concern, any break from reality in the waking state needs prompt medical attention. This is from a bloke who, in the waking world, has met angels, god, and a variety of other paranormal entities, but knows he is completely healthy, sane, and highly functional because he got expert medical opinion which confirms it.. Otherwise I would always be worried that there was a physical or mental cause for my experiences. Now i know that, while unusual, they are both real/physical, and relatively common among healthy sane human beings, according to the medical experts I consulted.

No one in 60 years has ever offered or prescribed drugs for me, other than for high blood pressure and cholesterol, and i ve never been depressed or anxious in my life, although i have been under a lot of external, work- related stressors in the last year. Strange things happen to perfectly well and normal people, but still, it is important to check your health first.

'As I went to bed at night' is the most important grouping of words in his OP. I've seen many threads I have seen here with people giving their experiences of hypnagogic hallucinations 'as I went to bed at night', swearing they weren't sleeping or dreaming. The hypnagogic state is famous for fooling people in this way, as the person has 1 foot in and 1 foot out of the dream state, fogging the boundaries between the two.

I forget which famous person in history it was who did the experiment of holding a glass in front of them while they drifted off to sleep. They swore they were awake the whole time until them actually falling asleep caused the glass to fall from their hands and shatter, waking them up. They were sure they were awake and were thinking, but the glass falling actually woke them up. Pretty interesting stuff.

Just wanted to add this:

from the wiki link posted earlier:

While typically nonsensical and fragmented, these speech events can occasionally strike the individual as apt comments on—or summations of—their thoughts at the time.

Yes, if its a dream state there is less cause for concern, although the reasons why this has developed and the symbolic /psychological causation of the content matter would be interesting to work out.

Once you understand the connection that exists betwen conscious and subconscious thought, and can control this connection, you can both understand your real waking fears, and how they translate into the dream state; but you can also use your dreams to find expression of/ release from, and solutions to, the actual physical fears and anxieties of "real"/waking life.

Dreams are the subconscious processing the conscious, and hence can be creatively manipulated to benefit the conscious mind and to solve real life problems and anxieties /worries, rather than increase them.

the voices have stopped for a few weeks now- i think it was because of stress and stuff like that. we had already asked a doctor about it and he had said it was because of the medicine and stress so i am good now, thank you everyone for helping me out!
