Israel's latest assault on Gaza

The official storyline is that Israel launched Operation Pillar of Defence on 14 November, 2012 because, in President Barack Obama’s words, it had “every right to defend itself.”

In this instance, Israel was allegedly defending itself against the 800 projectile attacks emanating from Gaza since January of this past year.

The facts, however, suggest otherwise.

From the start of the new year, one Israeli had been killed as a result of the Gazan attacks, while 78 Gazans had been killed by Israeli strikes. The ruling power in Gaza, Hamas, was mostly committed to preventing attacks. Indeed, Ahmed al-Jaabari, the Hamas leader whose assassination by Israel triggered the current round of fighting, was regarded by Israel as the chief enforcer of the periodic ceasefires, and was in the process of enforcing another such ceasefire just as he was liquidated.

An excellent and insightful piece. Enjoy.

Why would someone kill someone that was for a cease fire unless they really didn't want a cease fire. Some of the things the Israelis do seems counterproductive to me.

Because this guy also was the one who masterminded the kidnapping of Gilad Shalit, among other crimes. But his execution was just used as a pretext to start the war. This war was act 2 of a program that began a few weeks earlier in Sudan. Iran had actually created a factory for manufacturing Fajr5 missiles - the "pipes" used to strike at Tel Aviv over so long a distance. They were shipping them overland to points where they could be moved through tunnels into Gaza. These weapons are significantly more sophisticated, accurate and with greater range. Israel started this war to destroy that factory and then to destroy as many of the stocks of these weapons as they knew about. Mission accomplished after 1500 targets were nailed.

As an aside - I agree with the quandary he cites for Israel. They are progressively having their hands tied by the International community due to their concern for excessive casualties. The world continues in it's delusion that peace can be made with the Palestinians and when Israel is finally led by someone as witless as Obama they will probably give away concessions sufficient to try to make the world "like" them. The war that results will be impressive to see. And of course that war will be Israel's fault as well.
