How long will France hunt with hounds?

7 posts in this topic

Hunting with dogs is banned in much of Europe, including the UK, but in France the tradition is alive and well. Hunters face no challenge from politicians or animal-rights activists - but how long will this last?

As Hugues Lamy gets out of his car and into his boots in a forest clearing in Normandy, the heavens open.

But Mr Lamy will not let bad weather spoil the thrill of riding along as a pack of hounds hunts down a roe deer.

"We come here rain or shine," he beams. "This evening the tea, or the Scotch, will taste much better!"

The countryside is only kept like it is for hunting. When you remove the hunting, you ruin the countryside.

Hunting with dogs is regularly condemned by France's animal-rights lobby. Herve Belardi of the Societe Protectrice des Animaux calls it "an antiquated pleasure".

"The kill itself is gratuitously cruel," he says. "The animal is harried to exhaustion, and then it is either shredded by the hounds or has its throat ritually slit."

I agree because as we all know, in the wild, dogs and deer are strict vegetarians who would prefer to spend an afternoon drinking soy chai latte together at the Starbucks.

Banning foxhunting with hounds in the UK in 2005 was a stupid mistake and one of the many laws which Labour, with its MPs representing mainly big metropolitan areas and who have no idea what life in the country is like, introduced which are having a detrimental effect on our once-great nation.

The Conservatives said that, this year, they will introduce a vote in parliament on whether or not to re-legalise foxhunting with hounds in the UK again but, unfortunately, they have just broken their promise.

If some of the animal rights groups had their way no one would be hunting period.

I grew up in a hunting culture. In a place and at a time when it was still necessary to put food on the table. The deer were killed with guns and dogs were sometimes used but this kind of hunt does seem a bit more cruel. But if it's a tradition that has held together over hundreds of years then why not continue it? I'm sure the numbers of animals involved would be relatively few and the land might well be used for worse purposes.
