Eye to eye

I looked over into the other car,

waiting at a red light in Atlanta;

an elderly regal woman looked back,

eye to eye,

a lot can be exchanged in a short time.

She had a hard life,

made her strong but untrusting,

her looking back at me

expressed that,

I looked away,

uncomfortable to say the least.

Perhaps I was looking into a mirror;

it had nothing to do with her,

hence my discomfort,

my looking away,

my uneasiness too much to bear.

That was 30 years ago;

I doubt I have changed much.

If I saw her again,

what would I see,

my experience what would it be?

Would I look away?

On the inside I don't think we change much, if at all. On the outside...well we age and when we look in a mirror we don't see the same person looking back at us that we saw 30 years ago yet we are still that same person. In another 30 years we'll probably be thinking exactly the same.
