A court in Nepal has jailed members of a mob who burned alive a 40-year-old woman after accusing her of casting black magic spells in a remote southern village, an official said Tuesday.

Mother-of-two Dhengani Devi Mahato died when she was severely beaten, doused in kerosene and set alight in February last year after the village shaman (traditional spiritual healer) accused her of practising witchcraft.

I can't believe people still do this and apparently its not unusual for Nepal. At least this time they were prosecuted for it.

Its not too unbelievable to see these things still happen......just like some religions still stone women, unless told otherwise, these people will continue.

But someone or something must of told us years back that it was wrong, so why are some people still not changing their barbaric ways?

Simply because the world operates under difefrent beliefs and cultures; there isn't one moral code or rules or ethics that are laid down for us all.

Westerners simply seem to be ahead in terms of anti-barbarism and the old ways of life...mostly.

If they will start prosecuting them for this, or other barbaric actions performed around the world, it will stop for the most part. There's always going to be one in the crowd that's not mentally stable and will do what they want or what those voices in their heads are telling them to do.

What we see as barbaric, some still see as justice. Quite a scary thought when trying to created a "multicultural world"!!!!

A little ignorance, supersitition, and fanatic fear can lead to horrible crimes or deaths at the hands of mobs. Sadly it happen in today's times in third world countries who haven't been properly educated or oppressed by their government.

i know a couple of people from Nepal. Girija and Mork. Both have told me some freaky stories from their homeland, and witches weren't involved but would have been more believable then their stories. They don't know each other, and their stories were told years apart, but that a 100% record of people i know from Nepal who have had unexplained experiances. Maybe we need to start having ghost hunter tv shows based in Nepal.

BTW Mork can play the bongos and the didgeridoo simultaneously. Its an amazing experiance.

Other countries have their problems with killing people and children that have been accused of witchcraft. Its even against the law in some countries not just the locals killing people for it.

Witchcraft? Seriously? The United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund – UNICEF – says that tens of thousands of children in Africa each year are tortured and killed because of witchcraft. Blame is divided between local witchdoctors and Pentecostal churches that have led opposition to the witchdoctors.

Yeah, you gotta wonder if it has since occurred to anyone that the shaman was the one acting like a witch, inciting mob violence and hatred for another.
