11 posts in this topic

A giant stone animal has been found at an excavation site in Chengdu, southwestern China, baffling archaeologists as to what it may be.

The mysterious rock beast was unearthed in the capital of Sichuan province today and is thought to be 2,000 years old.

The stone animal weighed in at 8.5 tons and at 10ft 10in long, 3ft 11in wide and 5ft 7in tall.

The article suggests it's a panda, but I don't see any resemblance.

Some commentors suggested a hippo, even though hippos are nowhere near that region.

Looks more like a hippo than a panda, but who's to say the sculptor was even depicting a real animal.

Giant hyrax?

But let's hope no future archeologists finds one of Picasso's paintings.

I can see panda if I use my imagination. What ever it is though, it's still pretty cool.

A wild pig/boar is possible maybe a breed with a wider than average snout which is now extinct.

I vote for pig too because it looks a lot like a pig and pigs had already been domesticated in China for 8,000 years at the time of this carving.

They really stylize their animal sculptures so who knows what it is. A panda guess is as good as any.
