The absurdity of the GOP position on spending

questionmark

Recommended Posts

Republicans continue insisting today that the only acceptable way of averting the sequester is to replace its scheduled spending cuts with nothing but more spending cuts elsewhere. No new revenues. Period, full stop.

President Obama continues to demand a mix of spending cuts and new revenues via the closing of loopholes, and yesterday he called on Congress to agree on a short term package of cuts and tax reforms to temporarily delay the sequester cuts, since they could cripple the recovery. GOP leaders shot this down, because they continue to refuse to countenance any new revenues. As John Boehner put it today: “The American people believe that the tax question has been settled.”

Meanwhile, other Republicans are taking other steps to avoid agreeing to new revenues. Republicans on the Senate and House Armed Services Committee will unveil a plan today to avert the sequester for one year by paying for it with … a 10 percent across the board reduction in the federal workforce. (That would do wonders for the recovery.)

Obama says we have no spending problem...in fact, the solution to this bad economy is to increase the yearly deficeit from 1 Trillion to 2+ Trillion dollars. Obama has allowed the Repubs to dictate the pace of this recovery. It is time to bury the conservative party and go full force with the socialism of this country. Spend more Obama, um, um, um, spend more Obama, um, um, um.

Oh, by the way, if you are on unemployment, you qualify for a free govt. subsidized smart phone. How cool is that?

Republicans are not going to go along with Obamas plan because he wants additional tax revenue included with spending cuts. In essence a double dip on the taxing of America.

Personally, I think all forms of foreign aid and any troop activity that isn't essential should be cut from the budget until we're not in so much debt.

why do you lie like this? the CBO just scored next year. We are on course to have 840 some billion. A huge decrease, not an increase of anything.

but foreign aid is a piddling percentage of the federal budget. But I agree that the Pentagon could use some major cuts

The White House failed to produce a budget on time again this year. The 4th year in a row.

So how can you speculate a decrease without a budget ?

Im curious.

The white house isn't supposed to do the budget. Financing is the job of congress. All he can do is ask congress for money. He is, however, late on submitting his requests.

Oh, and to answer your question. It is the Congressional Budget Office that figured the 840 billion. Basically a bunch of bean counters that figure the amount going in and the amount going out and what not. They are the ones that provide economic data to congress.

Umm... that would describe the Obama party position on spending. After 4 years of wild deficit spending without results (quadrupling the national debt in the process), the solution is..... MORE deficit spending.

As you hint yourself, that is the definition of lunacy in itself.

But pandering politicians of all stripes have always loved Lord Keynes (although of course they never understood him).

Legalise and tax Marijuana and you'll have all the extra revenue you need.

But that would go against the "no tax increase agreement" many Republicans signed.

I think it also goes against the "nobody is allowed to have fun" platform so central to the party. :P

Well here's the thing. I was completely ready for "the fiscal cliff" and the sequestration cuts. Hell I wanted them to get a running start and jump off that damn cliff.

I do not understand why people do not see the need for spending cuts and increases in revenue...both. We MUST get our house in order. It's the principle of the matter if nothing else. What type of example are we sending out to the minds of the youth? It's ok to spend money you don't have...it's ok to be irresponsible. I think that is a bad thing to do.

I believe in fiscal responsibility. I hear people say that foreign aid is a 'small percentage of our problem"...or this is a small percentage...or that is a small percentage...but you add them all together and they actually make a dent...they become a bigger percentage. Cut the military back to a defending force....no one say to drop research and development....but drop the "globalism"...If there is not a "clear and present danger"...shut the damn money eating bases down. Why do we still have bases in Germany again? Are they not a sovereign nation? Let them tend to their own borders and we will tend to ours. We p!ss away so much money on that arrangement it is staggering...

It's also time to put people to work. If you are physically capable and out of work and on benefits...I am sure there are some state and federal projects that could use some man power...want a check and some food stamps? Find your work boots. But...I am waiting for the flashback on this...there used to be an old saying...those that don't contribute and help out don't get to eat....

I am not talking about starvation austerity...I am talking about some damn common sense. I am sick of the media and military propaganda that says we need to keep spending this or that over here or over there...nope...you spend no more than you project to take in the next year...period! In fact...spend 5 to 10% less and apply the remainder to the gigantic hole of debt the last few administrations have created...

/end rant

You are talking about the same party that believes its okay for you to have to give a urine sample to stay employed and pay taxes but it somehow becomes demeaning when you ask someone to do it before picking up their welfare and food stamps that were paid for by your taxes.

No welfare programs will ever be cut by the Democrats because that's how they keep their voter base.
