You can see a sleep disorder specialist if it starts affecting your life. It usually becomes worse if you're under stress.
ctz3 Posted February 10, 2013 #9 Share Posted February 10, 2013 This has happened to me often when I was younger. It was terrifying. I couldn't move a muscle but my mind was wide awake. I couldn't open my eyes, open my mouth, or make a sound. I kept praying to God please please let me move, I would try to move my toe, my finger, arm anything I couldn't even move my head and I would want to scream the feeling was so horrifying. I was completely awake but my body would not move. Most of the time it only lasted 3-4 min or so (which is a terrifying long time ) but one time it wouldn't stop and I just kept praying to God and trying to calm down and fall asleep so it would end. To end it, I would focus on one arm, or leg, or finger and just will the **** out of it to move move move just a little. This focus seemed for me to end it faster because once I could move one part of my body the 'hold' was instantly released. I hope this advice helps you. This hasn't happened to me in a long time, but when I was a teenager I can still vividly remember it happening at least 4 times. Once more, terrifying. I've had the exact same thing happen to me a few times. I felt that if I could just get one part of my body to move or if someone would touch me I could break out of it. Usually I just wound up falling back to sleep after a few minutes. I don't believe i've had this occur for awhile now though. It sounds like the original poster is experiencing the same thing. scowl Posted February 15, 2013 #13 Share Posted February 15, 2013 I wonder if there exist people in this state permanently. That was one theory of how schizophrenia might work although I think it's been mostly disproved.
chopmo Posted February 16, 2013 #14 Share Posted February 16, 2013 I zone out and tunnel vision day dream. But not so often any more I remember it being pretty intense when I was younger the sounds that came with it. I don't hear the sound of it any more but then again I got into the habbit of when I noticed it closing my eyes and "refreshing" if you will, so now that I realise it could be important try follow it but I think it's one of the concious aware things, because you know of it, it keeps happening more than normal or none at all. Frank Merton Posted February 16, 2013 #15 Share Posted February 16, 2013 When I'm awake I'm awake; when I'm asleep, I'm asleep. Then there is an in-between state I call "dozing" that is quite nice and not at all frightening and is when I come up with my best algorithms, although when this happens I suddenly become wide awake with excitement. There is also directed dreaming. I've played around with it but found it of limited if any use. About the only thing I do with it is when the dream is getting nightmarish I tell it to stop this or I'll wake up. The dream tends to obey. White Crane Feather Posted February 16, 2013 #16 Share Posted February 16, 2013 (edited) I keep been asleep and awake at once and it's creeping me out. I become paralysed as well To end paralysis, simply roll your eyes into your head. Your eyes cannot be pralyzed and the conciousness control with snap you back. Or you can just relax, give up anxiety and fear and surrender to the moment, then you are in for some interesting experiences. A quick cure for these issues are a good diet full of organic fruits and vegetables and becoming a runner. Some people however are simply prone to altered state issues.
