The speech was okay although partisan while complaining about partisanship. What people say is not nearly as important as what they do, so we will see.

I hate to be the one to point this out, but you have live in servants, so probably you speak from an entirely theoretical point of view, as in theoretically if the world economy totaly collapsed you may need to work in a sweat shop. In reality chances are you own one? Sorry if I'm out of line, and I'm not trying to belittle you, I'm truly not, but it's easy for a rich man to claim to know how cold it is in the slums during winter, while he sits next to a marble fire place.

Way too harsh OverSword. some people might consider me to be rich but I would never stoop so low as to run a sweatshop... I live comfortably, not ostentatiously, probably similar to Frank Merton.

That statement was outrageous; you have no idea what I went through in my life. And I don't have servants. I have family who take care of their elderly and sick parents.

I apologize, and may have some slight idea, as I am very close with several and have been acquainted with many, many refugees from your country as well as Cambodia and Laos. I thought you had servants because in another thread you made a reference to your cook and her husband who live with you, and I know that these days there are prosperous people in Veitnam. It is also pretty obvious that you are an educated individual which was no doubt rare for any but the very elite after the North won the war.

Too simplistic... the idea is to trade between member Nations from similar backgrounds and with strong human rights in terms of "fair pay for a fair days work". Quite honestly, these nations coming together could happily exist and prosper without the rest of the world. Talent and innovation is in place to move the Western World forward (instead of the stagnation that it has suffered from for 50 years or more). Of course this would mean raising Tariffs much higher for Asian countries, but I am not really seeing a downside to this...

I had meant to let this pass, but now I think I will address it. What I see in a trade agreement between the US and Europe is a rich man's club designed to stay rich and keep others out. The European agricultural policy is the real thing to complain of here, not Spanish sweatshops.

That is pretty much what happened after NAFTA was signed. The rich got richer and my job (whole industry actually) of 20 years, got shipped to Canada. Big surprise. Edited by OverSword

Thanks. Just for the record, my cook is my niece and she and her husband live here with their new baby free, and I do pay her what she would get elsewhere, but I know that if for any reason I couldn't she would do it anyway.

You will meet few of my generation who didn't go through a few years with little but cassava to eat.

My English has recently become of great value, but that wasn't always the case.

The usual suspects here could find nothing in Pres. Obamas State of The Union speech to like... why am I not surprised? The Reps. LOST the popular vote, and they will never get over it :passifier:

Well, I voted so I have every right to complain! The best thing in his speech is that there will only be three more SOTUs. His speech only proves that he is in a fantasy world. The Emperor had his best new suit on and those not quaffing the koolaid noticed.

I strongly suspect they ALL missed the part where the Pres. also said that the USA and the EU are going to enter into negotiations to create a Free - Trade Union with the European Union. Yes??

Creating a Free - Trade Bloc to match China and Asia will boost BOTH the USA (and by extension NAFTA) and the EU economic Regions. Trade with the EU already supports millions of USA jobs and amounts to some 630 Trillion Dollars in trade per annum.

No one missed it. I just couldn't believe it. Trade is good but these union partnerships will just squander wealth. Just look at NAFTA. Most of the jobs that left the US to Mexico are now in India.

What do I know though?

np, we understand.

If you don't agree with Obama's policies you can only be two things...a racist, a Republican or both.

Actually, I'm neither although I do tend to vote more Republican. Now I could care less what color anybody is but if voting Republican makes me anti Socialist, then I am against anything and everything of that ideology he stands for.

In any case the fall out will likely hold no surprises. Those who like Obama will praise the speech without asking just how these promises will be fulfilled and those who hate Obama with an unholy passion will continue to hate him no matter what he does. Such is the way with politics.

Those that hate Obama with a *Holy* passion will be asking just how these promises will be fulfilled… And those that hate him do so because they know he will never change.

Just an added note of clarification:Those that do hate Obama do so because they already know the answer to "how will he fulfill these promises". The answer is that he can't unless he robs our Liberty.

I re-iterate... the Usual Suspects here can find nothing whatsoever good in his speech. They do not even stop to engage their brain with sensible interrogative questions - just denunciations.

When people get like this then you know they have already lost, given up on improvements, given up on engaging with the "how to do it", and are just left with the "Cannot do it" mentality. it is self - defeating, and they would like nothing more than for any initiative to fail.

You are doing your Nation a disservice!!

It is time for the Reps to stand up to the plate and to make meaningful contributions to the debate instead of simply whingeing on and on because their team lost (again).

English should always be great value, because Europeans and Americans pretty much have the most influence on the world today than any other country.

You know, youre a usual suspect too. I know when you post it's gonna be a trashing of obamas opposition as if we are speaking to you personally. Like all liberals you are extremely predictive. Every single time I encounter you it's the same thing never with any substance and always with disdain for those who don't think the way you think they should think. The only one not getting over things is you not getting over that many of us oppose his ideas. Why don't you get over the that and contribute something substantial to the conversation.

I found plenty of great and wonderful things in his speech though the problem is that every great idea he had involves some type of government interaction or program.

He advocated smaller government while at the same time promoting more government programs.

He advocates getting out of debt while promoting more and more costly government programs.

He advocates investing in things and getting a R.O.I. as if the R.O.I.'s he spoke of have any factual evidence to back them up. If anything, the numbers come from predictions and you shuld know how prophets are viewed by realists. Most of all he speaks as if it is the governments job to make investments with our money. Hell, we all know by now he is a degenerate gambler. Solyndra? Fisker? Every green investment in the stimulus? All flops...

He advocated everybody having the chance to succeed out of one side of his mouth while trashing the successful out of the other side.

He talks about fixing roads and bridges as if it's the way of the future when in fact that is one of the first things our tax money should be spent on before all else.

He's a good speaker and if you take his words at face value well I could see how you'd like him so much. He has a knack for sure but if you consider the least bit how all these things are going to happen the way he thinks they should, ie federal programs, then you'd see it's all gonna cost money and liberty somewhere down the line.

Honestly, I'd love for America, the wealthiest nation in the world, to be able to do all these great and wonderful things and make everybody happy and successful but the two things I consider are thus far the government has proven completely incapable, incompetent and unwilling to be responsible with the money we give them now and that America was never about one big collective koombyah so much as it is about the individual pursuit of your own happiness and individual control of ones own path and desires. That doesn't mean you have to or will be greedy and selfish about it. It just means that you don't have to consume your whole life taking care of everybody else or having everybody else take care of you. Basically I wouldn't mind paying taxes for all these wonderful things but government will screw it up and they already steal enough from me as it is. If you want to make someone's life better than do it yourself or start a charity. I help people on my own. In my world I am the go to guy for most everybody close to me when it comes to needing a hand but I will absolutely never stop complaining about my unwillingness to help people like the Obamaphone lady. Hell, she's actually a happy person it seems but if you feel she deserves a better life, you help her. I have enough on my plate.

So far as associate degree level high schooling I think that sounds nice but it isn't going to work here. Mainly because the PC police will scream about fairness and dumb the testing back down to high school levels. That way everybody gets a fair shot. An associate degree isn't worth squat anyways if you don't land a job in that field and how many high school kids know what they want to do anyways? Want better education? Get rid of the teachers unions and let schools and teachers compete. Stop keeping crap teachers around because of their union contracts. Hire and fire based on merit and success rates. Ya know, like a report card? That way only the best of the best will stick around and the schools that can't get their acts together won't be around to give kids sub-par education. There will always be hopeless students but that's a different issue that lies within upbringing. I don't mean less than intelligent kids. I mean the trouble makers and disrupters.

I don't know you, so I'm not sure if this post is satirical or sarcastic (which I hope it is), but if your serious it has to be the most ridiculous post I've ever read. It's as stupid as saying " If you agree with Obama's policies you can only be two things....black racist, a democrat or both."

It was most definitely sarcasm. I've been called both while I'm neither and it gets very tiresome. :tu:

I re-iterate... the Usual Suspects here can find nothing whatsoever good in his speech.

That is fact. All this means is that the Usual Suspects are the vanguard of the spearhead. Not even an ounce of koolaid passes their lips. I.e. they don't allow themselves to be brainwashed by a slick operator. They've seen the scam before. They've learned the lesson.

They do not even stop to engage their brain with sensible interrogative questions - just denunciations.

Good thing I added my point of clarification. I was worried someone might not understand – oops, too late. So let me put it this way, those that denounce have engaged their brain. Why do you think they denounce in the first place? They've asked the interrogative questions and either got the wrong answer of no answer what so ever. Obama's speech could be boiled down to tax and spend. We are never going to get out of this mess by doing that. Anyone who thinks that tax and spend is the only way, then they are quaffing the koolaid. So my question would be at what point do you wake up? There will come a time when this course will reach a point that it will be too late to pull away from the precipice. At that point, it will be too late for you to say "oops, my bad".

When people get like this then you know they have already lost, given up on improvements, given up on engaging with the "how to do it",

On the contrary. When people get like this, they realize that they need to stop the bleeding first and then work on *how to do it*. If they felt as if they had lost, then you would see them just give up and accept their fate. Actually, before anything is done, we must first set the ideology and mend the foundation. Once Socialism has been exercised from the system, then we will be on the road to recovery. I for one will never stop the fight.

and are just left with the "Cannot do it" mentality. it is self - defeating, and they would like nothing more than for any initiative to fail.

Sounds like you are one of those that bathe in the koolaid. Those that denounce Obama are in the can do mentality. All they want is to work toward the initiative of having Socialism fail. Well, it will fail anyway, but it needs to fail sooner than later so that the low information voter and those that take their freedom for granted will see the error of their way before they take the rest of us over the cliff. So there is an urgency involved.

You are doing your Nation a disservice!!

Actually, they are the ones upholding the promise of the Constitution. It's the Liberal, Progressives, Socialists, etc lead by Obama that is doing the disservice.

It is time for the Reps to stand up to the plate and to make meaningful contributions to the debate instead of simply whingeing on and on because their team lost (again).

What the reps need to do is stop whigning and stop caving. They need to push for a Balanced Budget Amendment (28th). Or repealing such monstrosities of legislation like Obamacare and replace it with common sense healthcare reform.

My bad, and I should have realized it. Its just this whole POTUS thing gets so fustrating and emotional sometimes. I believe everyone has the right to express their opinion but when a post really tweeks your brain the response is often expressed in ways you regret later. Sorry Michele and thanks for the clarification.

I watched the SOTUA replay last night to hear Obama's promises to improve a country he claims is improving. Millions of people continue to look for full-time employment...and we're still leaving Afghanistan, this is the time to focus less on the military budget that's about to get cut. I voted for Obama because I believe in him and support his policies calling to reform medical care and other issues, but I doubt things are improving as fast Obama said they are.

Obama is a gifted orator as far as politicians go. Some of them can't articulate worth a damn.

Then again, it would be terriying to have to speak in front of the entire world.

I'm curious as to how the whole pre-school deal is going to unroll.
