India to launch Mars mission this year

44 posts in this topic

India's space programme has been used to launch communications satellites, which have allowed every village in India to have a tv. This enables information and education to be beamed to even the most remote locations.

=============================================================================

What will they be watching? adverts and FOOD programmes? Boy, they really have got their priorities mixed up! T.v before food and education for the villages??

Is that how they are going to educate their children? with t.v`s?

How about SCHOOLS and FOOD first???? Thats what I thought our aid was going to them for!!

If you wish to look ill-less informed please try to read and comprehend what people have ACTUALLY said. Given that you have quoted me you can clearly see that I said that the TVs have been sent to remote villages.

I also clearly stated that the purpose of the TVs is for educational programmes. What do you think is the cheapest of the following options if you are a developing nation and you want to educate your children:

  1. Building schools in difficult to reach remote villages
  2. Transmit educational programmes to hundreds of villages at the same time by TV

What the Indians are doing makes perfect economic sense. The way to bring a nation out of poverty is to build sound infrastructure, educate the people and build a modern technological and scientific nation. It is hat China has already done and it is what India is doing know. That is why India has one of the fastest growing economies on Earth, because it is planning for the long term and not just tomorrow. That is why the UK will stop giving aid to India by 2015... because it no longer needs it.

If you are going to claim that India should not have a scientific programme because it has poverty then there is not a country on Earth that you could not make the same accusation of. Developed nations justify scientific research as a way of ensuring long term economic security, why should developing nations be denied the same thing?

If developing nation are criticised for having scientific programmes then how are they expected to become richer? What is the point of educating people to a high standard if there are no jobs for them afterwards?

India knows the answer to these questions, it is just sad that so many people from the supposedly better educated west can't see past their prejudices and appreciate what India is trying to achieve.

I've actually grown to heat posting news stories about India's space programme. I know in advance that the vast majority of posts will come from people with no knowledge or interesting in space flight making off topic attacks against India. This topic has going exactly the way I thought it would.

Sometimes you don't need to be psychic to know the future, you just have to know that more often than not the people that know the least are going to shout the loudest.

the future is in space. if we waste all our time and resources fixing everything here, we might not have the resources left to go into space. therefore the sooner we "explore and expand" the better.

That makes sense of course. But when your a country that has so much social problems, i don't think it makes sense. I'm not just picking on India. Its the same for any country.

The company i work for has a head office in India, so we get workers coming over for training, and stuff. When i'm out for dinner with them they always say the same thing. Your so lucky to live in Country like Canada, then they go on to tell me all the problems in India, and it sounds like hell on Earth for most Indian citizens, except the rich.

The poorer class( which represents a big majority in India) murder young female babies because it will be a money burden, they murder their elderly because they can't take of them, the list goes on and on of things i heard. No rights for women, etc etc.

India is a big player, but they have so many problems at home to deal with.

The supposedly better educated west are the ones who have given them the money, and yet they still want more aid!!! but one thing i will say, it is the stupidity of our western leaders who give them OUR money, they should have made sure it was going to were it was intended....to the starving people, NOT to build spacecrafts.

I will fully agree with what you have put here "India knows the answer to these questions"....yes they do for sure, and do not give a damn about the poor and starving people.

Why the US is.

No they are not, like the UK they are giving them money and there are still poor and starving people, so again, the money has not gone to feed them! Its gone to build spacecraft so the rich can become even richer and they do not give a damn about the poor people.

I have to wonder where some of the people who posted above have been the last fifty or so years. India is no longer a basket case. It has made major progress and its middle class now outnumbers that of the US. Yes it has poverty, all countries have poverty.

Yes, all countries do. Sickening really.

Here in England we still have adverts asking for aid to India, this is the reason why some of us are so against what we see here. There are many rich people in India, they do not care about the poor or starving but they are willing to take aid of other countries. The aid is for the starving, not for the rich to get richer!

Why should they? Unless it directly benefits one self and their fitness, there is no biological reason for them to do so.

You are absolutely right, why should they?

But if they do not want to help their own people its best not ask others for aid saying its going to help them.

Its in the nature of the rich to get richer; that is often why they are rich. I live in a socialist country and believe me there are rich people here too, in spite of the fact that it isn't suppose to be able to happen with our particular economic system. In the end it is allowed because taking away their money actually does the nation harm and generally does little to help the poor and even makes them poorer.

Things like a space program are generally undertaken by countries like India for very practical reasons -- to control their own communications, their own weather and other surveillance and mapping, and so on. Sending a rocket with a payload to Mars is not much in such a budget and serves national pride as much as winning the World Cup (and probably would cost less than fielding the team).

There are always the poor -- isn't that what Jesus said -- and anointing his feet was as worthy. The point I take from this is that one can do only so much for the poor and then it becomes a waste of money and indeed an entrapment keeping them in poverty.

I suspect the campaigns for aid to the poor of India are organized charities with well paid staffs. They do some good in the process of making themselves nice careers.

I understand that.

Thats great then. Lets see what happens in years to come and see if all these poor villages have had the benefit of it.

First the U.S., gives money to almost every country on the planet.

Second, generally speaking the poor in the U.S. are richer than the middle class of those countries.

Third, India hs a much larger population than the USA.

funny all the people saying that its a waste of time and money. It definately is not. Space is where the future of humanity lies, wether you believe it or not, we will be colonizing other planets one day within the next few centuries (providing we dont wipe ourselves out).

Obviously this will take time to happen, so therefore you need to act on this stuff early in preparation for the future.

yes india has social problems, but so do the good ol' US of A. If you think the US is a perfect country then you are blind. They have poverty, crime and uneducated people there to. At least India are looking towards their future.

Capatilism at its finest eh? Blame the west for trying to turn every country in a capatilistic nation that only cares about money.

But be honest here, yes some of the rich are greedy and only bettering themselves, but that also happens even in the west countries.

Both India and China have come a long way in the past few centuries and they will continue to grow. You can expect countries to go from extreme poverty to a becoming prosperous and free without some time for people to adjust.

China got there long before India.

I am in agreement that other countries do it, I also agree that the the western elites only care about money making money out of these countries, but they are also getting rich themselves out of it....some of them are!! That is my point!!!!

I am not on the side of the elite westerners just as i am not on the side of the fat cat Indians making a mint out of it for themselves.

Kudos for India sending a probe to mars, that will boost India tech sector and creating more jobs not mentioning science. Far more useful than buying a cheese burger to the poor ;-)
