Lessons from the Failed War on Drugs

105 posts in this topic

The global war on drugs has cost billions and taken countless lives -- but achieved little. The scant results finally have politicians and experts joining calls for legalization. Following the journey of cocaine from a farm in Colombia to a user in Berlin sheds light on why.

"Pablo Escobar said to me: 'One shot to the head isn't enough. It has to be two shots, just above the eyes.'

Jhon Velásquez, nicknamed "Popeye," is sitting on a white plastic chair in the prison yard. "You can survive one shot, but never two. I cut up the bodies and threw them in the river. Or I just left them there. I often drove through Medellín, where I kidnapped and raped women. Then I shot them and threw them in the trash."

Can't hurt no-one.

But it helps putting drug abusers into prison? The stuff is illegal, and still tons of people are on it. Legalise drugs, regulate them, educate people, and try helping the abusers.

Yes, it may hurt some people, just like alcohol or pharmaceuticals hurt some people. Regulation is the key, and prohibition does not help anyone, except for the drug cartels. In the end it is YOUR choice if you want to do drugs - whether they are illegal or not.

It pretty much is everywhere already. A simple google search will already show 12 and 14 years olds already buying it. I think that probably is the first lesson that the war on drugs showed us.

The war on drugs has failed big time. The war kills more people than those that use drugs.

See me living more practical just threw my child into the shower because he was reading. I was appalled at his behavior. He had the whole candy store to choose from and he was reading.

The only thing the war on drugs is doing is lining the drug cartels pockets, causing many innocent people to be murdered and making it profitable to build private prisons.
