Caffeine is dangerous and should be regulated

39 posts in this topic

Caffeine is so dangerous and is being consumed in such high quantities that it should now be regulated, a leading expert claims.

Dr James, editor in chief of the Journal of Caffeine Research, and head of the department of psychology at Reykjavik University, Iceland, says he is concerned that the substance is increasingly being added to products such as energy drinks, alcoholic drinks and medicines.

As a result, many of us are unwittingly consuming way more than we think - with worrying implications for our health and society as a whole.

Eum...if you're gonna buy an energy drink you can kinda excpect it's gonna have some caffeine in it. No need to get ridiculous about it.

And if you're gonna buy Tia Maria , a coffee liquor .... what do you expect? Lemon?

You have energy gums, again, energy .. what do you expect?

Weight loss pills? Caffeine? DUH

Cmon...

Does this article try to say that people can't even think associatively anymore that caffeine and energy are related concepts?

Seriously....

Like so many other things in our lives these days, moderation people, enjoy but don't over indulge.

Cup of coffee or two, OK.

Pot of coffee or two, Ouch.

I've been saying for years, after smoking they will start regulating what you you like to eat and drink and then there will be no stopping them. It won't be long before they have audio along with the surveillance cameras and you'll get tickets in the mail for uttering obscenities.

What does regulate mean exactly?

Something like this, from the article:

'He notes that while some countries in Europe and Scandinavia have begun to take regulatory action, including sales restrictions and product labelling, most countries including the UK and the U.S. have a ‘regulatory vacuum’.

...

He says that in order to highlight the risks of caffeine, products should be labelled with the amount they contain and sales to children in particular should be restricted.'

People are dangerous and should be regulated.

Only the ones that do not accept friend requests on facebook. :su

Don't think that caffeine needs to be regulated broadly. Now I humbly suggest that manufactures stop putting to much of it into sodas and then aim their advertisement towards little kids. Me? I'm for common sense, hoping it would catch on and become popular eventually.

I'm screwed. I drink about 4 cups of coffee a day. Then I might have green tea the rest of the day.

Well, that sounds reasonable. Not as sensationalist as the headline suggest. It sounded like he wants to deprive me my right to get coffenated in the morning.

How am I going to get my edge now?

Drink loads of tap water and Red Bull?

It's not the caffeine that will kill you but the sugar.

As far as I'm concerned caffeine only makes you wide alert.

It isn't like that old episode of Star Trek where sleep deprivation caused havoc.

Whoever came up with this needs to wake up and smell the coffee.

Because I'm not relying on tap water because all the impurities might not be filtered out.

But at least I'll get my wings even though Red Bull dosn't really give off an aroma.

The only thing I can say after this news is Jesus wept...

This is stupid as hell.I can remember back when i was 15-17 playing football and ephedrine was in every supplement that claimed to boost energy and also contained caffeine.Ephedrine has been banned yet athletes who eat, drink,or anything else irresponsibly still die.Drink and drive = dead,Get yourself shot =dead,Natural causes = dead. This country and its people just cannot elect enough morons fast enough to regulate themselves to the same end.Live and die free,or live and die in chains.I prefer the former.

I can agree with with brown, the sugar is worse for your health than the caffeine.

No one will ever regulate my coffe consumption, over my dead body...I drink 1-2 coffe cups in the morning everyday i drink black coffe without sugar, well the original turkish coffe.. and that has very energetic effect on my body...Makes you feel more alive faster.. without it i am like zombie..

Just for info research has proven that 2-3 coffe cups a day are healthy in some ways.. but only coffe without any milk and creme, that has been proven to be poisonous for the body. I did my homework and when i saw their conclusons i know how to make it safe and usable.

Edit: I dont drink any energy drinks, or fizzy drinks or anything similar... Water and syrups are best and healthy,

I just see it as i am not going to live forever no matter what i do.I have studied the human body extensively since i was 12 years old, since then i have come across obstacles i will never be able to completely overcome.I do not need some *******s who think they know best to tell me how to live the rest of my life.I will enjoy the time i have here to the best of my ability while still enjoying my life.If some do not like it they can kiss my ass.

Being diabetic and obese and having the money to afford some specialists has educated me about sugar. Avoid it, especially in any sort of dissolved form, since then it goes straight into the system and confuses the daylights out of the insulin receptors as well as the pancreas.

Put milk in coffee and you have dissolved lactose. Put sugar in and you have dissolved sucrose. They both do the same thing.

I gave up alcohol, including wine and beer (somebody hold me up). Now give up coffee? No -- I'll take mine black. That means I have to keep the pot and all very clean, and have to measure things properly as I make them, so that it isn't bitter, but fine. It is wonderful when you do those things anyway.

After venting first, I went back and read the article. There is nothing there. No study, just anecdotes, and them not primarily about coffee but about "energy drinks" that contain not just caffeine but loads of other things. This is bad journalism and doesn't even approach being science.

The advice given above about moderation is well taken regardless.

I've only been hearing how good coffee is for you...

In March 2011, research led by the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, that followed over 30,000 women for 10 years, found those who drank more than one cup of coffee per day appeared to have a 22 to 25% lower risk of stroke, compared to non-drinkers. The researchers also found that "low or no coffee consumption was associated with an increased risk of stroke in women"

In 2009, researchers in Finland and Sweden reported a study that followed over 1,400 people over 20 years, and found that those who drank 3 to 5 cups of coffee a day in their midlife years had a 65% lower chance of developing dementia and Alzheimer's disease compared with those who reported drinking no coffee at all or only occasionally.

The "expert" is an alarmist, (in my opinion). If you consume a dozen energy drinks everyday, or several pots of coffee, or whatever your favorite caffeine laden beverage is, you might want to cut back. Moderation is the key to everything, you can make the claim that any substance in excess is dangerous, but ultimately it is up to the consumer to self control to "police" themselves as an individual, not a government agency. And, I have, in the past, abused energy drinks myself, and made myself stop because I was spending way too much money daily on them.

These experts are a bunch of god damn morons. Sure, it's unhealthy. So are cigarettes, Burger King, and alcohol but I'll keep doing/using them. Quit trying to regulate everything, we're suppose to be free people and I'll do what the **** I want.

I can only speak with regards to my bad-ass anxiety disorder.

Caffeine, or any stimulant will "set-me-off", so I avoid them at all costs.

Funny thing is, I used to be a very heavy coffee drinker, but I can't do that now at all.

Beer calms me down. Thank God for beer! Strong beer that is... :passifier:
