i have been saying it for years, why look for work that pays check, when you can get enough welfare (and medcaid, and food stamps) and still work for cash, and pay 0 taxes.

if you find job you loose food stamps and medicaid-the best medical ins, after gvmt cadillac plans. and you have to pay taxes

How do you get on welfare though?

I had lost a job, had a few months of not finding one, and could not even get food stamps, as they said my unemployment was enough.

I know what you mean though, makes me fricken sick.

Yes. Im curious if you threw disability SSI into your equation. Minimum wage is not profitable period !! Nor is upping the min wage. We have a wage vs cost of living issue and welfare has kept up with it a little bit better then minimum wage but not by much.

I believe I read somewhere that for the cost of living in the USA that the minimum wage should be somewhere around 28$

after unemployment runs out one can apply for welfare, in nyc it is easy, in most cases you will get it, assuming you don't have a lot on your bank account, not sure how much. also having assets matters as well.

If you can avoid the welfare system do so. It is an invasive species.

I did, I worked " side jobs " helping people around their homes and such, until I found a full time job. I do have self esteem :)

Min. wage in Oregon is around $8.00 a hour. Unemployment is $12.00 a hour for most. Something is wrong with this picture, and as you pointed out, neither are enough to survive on, unless you have no bills, and live in a one bedroom studio with a room mate, and have no heat or A/C/ on.

We should have a good comparative understanding of Oregon then as I live there as well.

Eugene. No welfare here. I get food stamps as does a good percentage of my community. We have nothing but service jobs left here. Unless you count Govmnt/City jobs. Oregon is horrid for being a welfare state but we truly do not have the jobs for our population so its a lose lose in my opinion.

Understand, if I had not recently gotten a job with GP, me and the wife would be back in Nevada living with the mother in law, looking for work.

Sucks, love it here, but it is really for retiree's, and family business's.

Not sure about Eugene. I am on the coast, in between Bandon and Langlois, about 38 miles south of Coos Bay.

Will be in Eugene for a couple of Duck games this year though.

It's tough to work in retail jobs (me and my wife do), in addition to my disability (SSI) I receive and we maintain a decent size income to support ourselves. I never collected welfare, nor unemployment and I been on my own on a low fixed income until I gotten married. We live in our means while hovering above the poverty line...but our socioeconomic level is worriesome.

Sakari, Where you live is similar to the economics of the Palm Springs area: focused on retirees with millionaire type incomes and a large welfare state system for low-wage employees in the resort industry (hotels, condos, housing, landscaping, hospitality and agriculture), but locally the tourism, construction and real estate market industries shouldn't be too bad, though we had a deep recession when the housing bubble "burst" violently in the region of Southern Cal. 5-some years ago.

It appears there's a bigger incentive to apply and remain on welfare than work in a fast food job or be a school teacher, although my Mom knew two school teachers with husbands are in the upper-class brackets (their backgrounds) and not paid severely to a point they reside in the neighborhood my Mom and brother still live in is a gotten somewhat depressed section of town over 35 years she lived there.

Very true...

If you do not have a family business, or farm, you can get into logging ( I am in a logging mill now ), or live on min. wage at a gas station.

Now, check out Bandon Dunes ( $275.00 green fee )....I had a interview for a Supervisor job over Janitorial......Get this, $11.00 a hour, for a Supervisor job! This place has 5 top courses, is all ways in the top 10 gold courses in the world ( number 1 more then once ), and brings in Celebrity status people.......

http://www.bandondunesgolf.com/

Unemployment I was getting ( I received one week before landing a job ) $12.05 a hour........People are just taking advantage now, actually have been, but at least at one time, people were paid a decent amount.

Socialism is the answer.

Only if the question is "what is the problem?"

Capitalism promotes greed which leads to inequality and poverty and I really don't get the American love affair with capitalism. The state should provide and care for everyone so the people who collect welfare are only taking what they are owed because the flawed capitalist system has failed to provide them with the means to support themselves. I'm always disgusted at the level of poverty that exists in America its about time you introduced socialist policies which undermine business and free enterprise. Industry should be nationalised and come under public ownership!

That's because a lot of you are right wing bible wielding vigilante nutjobs.

The capitalist riposte to poverty and inequality is 'the poor want to be poor'.

"The only alternative to socialism is barbarism" - Karl Marx (I think American society proves this or haven't you checked the homelessness figures for your country?)

Also a lot of these right wing conservatives who bang on about 'hard work' and who criticise welfare have usually had the breaks and opportunities in life which have been denied to people from poorer socioeconomic backgrounds.

I guessed you didnt live here. But sorry we are neither socialists nor communists here so call us whatever else you like but those 2 dont fly in America. Been that way since Columbus landed....Or should I say the Vikings....Or should I say the Cro Magnon that crossed the icebridge and eeked out his survival in a hostile environment.

If youd like to stereotype and fling **** tell me from what glorious part of the world your from and Ill be happy to point out your failures.

Come see me, we will discuss that.

Where is this " special " place where you sit your egotistical ass?

Your reply is so far from being correct, I can not even begin to reply to it, not until I know where you call home. ( I would venture to bet it is a place the US has helped one way or another )

The 'problem" is that WE don't have state-sponsored, minor-child labor, as opposed to China, for example.

Which reduces the costs because they pay them little to nothing as they are chained to a post and raped every night. Yet their goods are in WalMart, etc...

The only time you helped us was when you made your belated appearance in WW2 after us English had been holding of the Third Reich on our own for nearly two years.

By the way I'm a socialist through and through so there's no point arguing.

 You are one naive chap. How many cargo ships full of supplies lie at the bottom of the Atlantic or in the bellies and guns of British soldiers during those so called belated years. Many manned and captained by Americans. As well as many other countries. See thats the problem with socialism. They distort history to fit there own needs.

And the RAF had many American pilots in it volunteers btw. So really its time to go read a book or something because you sound like a dolt.

I'm not saying we didn't need your help and I haven't got anything personal against America just capitalism its just a shame the two things often seem to be inseparable. And I was joking before when I called you all bible bashers learn to laugh at yourself (I suppose it must be hard in a capitalist society though where everything is competition)!

The Socialist Party of America should be running your country.
