Game of Thrones

Link of Hyrule

Good episode, like the last one. By looking at episode titles, looks like the last 3 episodes are going to be

ep8 - The viper and the mountain - they will fight. I don't think they'll change the book outcome here

ep9 - Keepers of the wall - the battle on the wall. will be cool to see giants in action

ep10 - Children - probably means children of the forest.... maybe we will meet leaf or the three eyed raven

I think it would be a good idea if you used spoiler tags when discussing future events in the series.

Maybe we should have a seperate thread for people who have read the books ?

I would like to be able to discuss the books (they are great aren't they), while at the same time i would hate to spoil anything for the non book readers :tu:

I broke down and watched an episode, although I don't think it's psychologically or physically healthy to watch things with excessive violence. I have one question -- at the rate they kill people off, how does the place stay populated?

They have the biggest cast of any previous TV series :tu:

And the cast is only going to become bigger in the next season, we still haven't seen Victarion, Euron, old and young Griff (with entourage), Doran, Arianne, ( ), Wyman Manderly (lord to fat to sit a horse), the kindly man and so on (

I don't know if this would be considered a spoiler to ask, but...

Has Cersei married again?

As long as we keep on the spoiler tags on i see no problem with that:

The answer is no. I am not going to say why, because that would ruin a very big surprise for you. ;)

Damn. For both parts of your answer. :P I'll get to it in the book sooner or later. *goes off and pouts* :P

There's only one way to find out. Keep watching and don't worry, it's good for you.

To those that have read the books,

What do you think Littlefinger's end game is?

I know there are a lot of theories out there.

One theory is he wants to be king, others say hand of the king, still others say he wants to set himself up as Warden of the North.

I was just thinking the other day that what if the most ambitious character in game of thrones really isn’t, and Petyr Baelish is really doing what he is doing simply because he loves Cat and is getting back at those who he thinks hurt her and kept her from him.

And also:

Who do you think will be the 3 dragon riders?

I think

1. Dany Targaryen

2. Jon (Snow) Targaryen ( I know what some of you are thinking and no Jon was not killed. If he was killed that would be a whole lot of story wasted. I know Martin has killed people off in the past without thinking, but I don't think he would kill Jon for so little a reason of mutiny.)

Martin may be a genius or the most transparent writer I have ever read.

3. Aegon Targaryen

And Brandon Stark will enter the mind of one of the dragons.

As i understand it G.R.R.Martin has indeed told them how it will end.

When the producers first met Martin, he apparently asked them the following question, to see if they had paid attention when reading the books:

- Who is Jon Snows mother ?

And they got it right !

They still haven't told what their answer was :tu:

I think i might know:

Not really a spoiler, just a guess.

Lyanna Stark is the mother and Rhaegar is the father ?

To be fair, if someone has read the books and didn't get that they would be pretty dumb. Martin has spelled it out so much that he has done everything but outright say it.

I did the same and tried to watch the Pilot a week ago. I made it through about 15 minutes of peoples heads being chopped off every 30 seconds or so - and looking uber fake - before I decided I would switch it off. Not very interesting at all I thought, just an excuse to televise violence.

Actually I think not; programs like that cheapen life and glorify politics and murder. Even though most people see it as only entertainment, there are those not so stable.

Guys it's just entertainment. It actually has a good story on top of the violence. That's opinion of course but you shouldn't be so serious about it.

You're looking way to much into this. It is a TV series.

Sadly, life has always been cheap, especially in times past. Politics has always been filled with murder and back-stabbing. Sadly, this is how it;'s been. :S Just because they make a TV show on it, doesn't make the show bad...

I think the series is interesting, it shows how people did fight and die for power and all those that supported their causes, but I do hope the beautiful dragon lady gets it. she seems the most kindest.

Well, beautiful Queen Dany did indeed get something in the last episode...a very *hot* Daario Naharis! In the books Daario isn't supposed to be all that good looking though. It's nice that they made that particular change for the series (easier on the eyes!).

It is just entertainment to you. If you've been in war you may have a different reaction -- all those slaves and whatnot being killed are lives and this sort of thing cheapens it.

I will say one thing. I use to harp on all the sexual prudery when I thought graphic violence much worse. Now the sexual part has caught up.

There is no law says I have to watch it, and I won't. The thing is I worry about the effects on those not completely balanced, as well as the overall effect to efforts to make this a more humane world.

Life in ancient times (in reality no less) was violent, oppressive, brutal, sexually exploitive and so on. Historical dramas can and do highlight such negative activities. IMO there's no reason why historical fiction can't as well. Game of Thrones is an adult drama and as such potential viewers should be forewarned. If portrial of violence etc. bothers you then it's not the type of TV series that's for you.

Also, I think that modern 'cop shows' and 'murder mysteries' probably encourage violence more than historical dramas since those acts of violence are set in the here and now.

Frank, I understand you fear crazy people susceptible to influence by media violence but lighten up. It is a fictional TV show, made for grown-ups as stated above, based on a fictional book that probably uses elements of historical reality in its perception of medieval societies. Ehh, maybe your just not cut out for it. Just don't watch but you're missing out on a modern classic.

  • 2 weeks later...

I was not emotionally prepared for that. The credits rolled and I just stared at the screen with my hands over my mouth the entire time unable to move.

Well I don't think it's historical reality at all or the species would long since have vanished. The reality is that through most of history people have been born, lived, and died with very little happening to them. We get a different impression of history because the narratives concentrate all the exciting parts together.

Otherwise it'd be boring. Anyhow, I simply said there's probably elements of historic reality in the social dynamics and the bloodshed and means of implementation.

I figure I may appear square here if not positively trapezoid, and I accept the realities of history have to be understood and accepted. The latter however can be achieved in history textbooks without the graphic intensity.

I feel the appeal here is to sadistic impulses and of course ordinary pornographic impulses. I have never had anything against pornography as long as they are adults and there is no portrayal of sadism or rape or other similar anti-social impulses. I have always had a thing against graphic violence. This is pure cheap commercial use of people's less fortunate instincts and is degrading. One can have a ripping murder mystery without the actual murder scene, one can have a truly frightening horror show without blood and gore, using suspense.
