The Mafia

Same here B,talk about some interesting characters....They came from all walks of life

See John Dillinger was likened as a modern day Robin Hood by the common folk. His crime spree occurred during the 1930s Depression, at a time when many people were unable to pay their mortgages and were losing their homes and farms to the banks. The banks were public enemy number one to many during the Depression.

Here are some quotes from John Dillinger. During a bank robbery on January 15, 1934, a police officer was killed. He later told his lawyer, "I've always felt bad about O'Malley getting killed, but only because of his wife and kids. ...He stood right in the way and kept throwing slugs at me. What else could I do?"

John Dillinger killed one policeman but his gang were responsible for 10 deaths and 7 wounded.

Another quote, "I'm traveling a one-way road, and I'm not fooling myself as to what the end will be. If I surrender, I know it means the electric chair. If I go on, it's just a question of how much time I have left."

be very careful where you get your information....that article is published on the barnes review website...which is basically an anti-semitic / neo-nazi site originally set up to promote holocaust denial by a man called willis carto....google him....his friends include the kkk, christian identity loons and others....

That's good advice. We need to consider the source, but a stopped clock or watch is right twice a day. The involvement of specific Jews in organized crime is a fact of history, and the involvement of specific Jews continues in various forms. To deny this truth is as unfair as falsely blaming Jews for the activities of Irish gangsters. Israeli organized crime groups run sex slave rings. They cooperate with Russians and others. Some anti-Jewish people indeed will exploit this situation for their own ends, but facts are facts. The vast majority of people know that most Jews, like most people of other ethnicities, abhor these kinds of crimes.

indeed. i'm not attacking the integrity (or otherwise) of the information...just pointing out the source has an agenda.

eat wherever you want but just be aware of whose doing the cooking and what else may be on the menu.

I don't know if there is any difference between the Israeli mafia and Russian mafia. They could be the very same entity.

Yeah, had I known what kinda slant TBR had, I wouldn't have posted the article.

But I also reiterate I don't think there is any misinformation in the article though.

You both do realize that both Russia and Israel are amongst the numerous countries that DOESN'T extradite criminals, don't you?

So, yeah, if you are scum of the Earth, that murdered a bunch of innocent or ran a child porn ring, once that individual are safely within the Russian or Israeli borders, they are basically untouchable to foreign law.

I couldn't agree more with your advice. Unfortunately, it's difficult to find objective sites that don't have agendas. It's the same with news media. Look at Fox News and MSNBC. Both have their own narratives. I think that Fox News shows both sides of ideas and issues more than its competitors, but they skew conservative. You need to look at a wide array of sources to get a better understanding of the big picture. Alternative sources pick up the ball when mainstream sources drop it.

B Jenkins, I have a question for you in order to get this thread back on track after I derailed it in the above post. What are some of the best documentaries and films on organized crime, in your opinion? I'd like to see some of the new movies, as well as movies that I missed in the past. I'm sure that I missed a few good films.

Hmm... I haven't seen many docs on organized crime to be honest. Here are some that should be of interest:

Camorra: Italy's Bloodiest Mafia

Code Of The Camorra

There is a film made about the Camorra directed by Matteo Garrone titled "Gormorrah" that really exposes unglamorous, sleazy, and dangerous lifestyle of Italy's organized crime. I read the book also written by Robert Saviano. The book is terribly flat and dull read though.

As far as mob films go, the usual suspects Scorsese's Mean Streets, Goodfellas, and Casino.

De Palma's The Untouchables and Carlito's Way.

Coppola's The Godfather trilogy.

The Irish mob in The Friends Of Eddie Coyle.

English organized crime in The Long Good Friday and The Krays.

Russian mafiya in Eastern Promises.

Hmm... I will post up more if I think of them.

Curse Of The Camorra

This documentary also looks at the rise of the Nigerian Mafia in Italy. Because you see, the biggest cocaine drug routes run from Columbia and Peru through to West Africa (especially Nigeria) before it is distributed through Europe. The Nigerians used to be drug mules, deal drugs, human traffick, and prostitution rings for the Camorra. Now they've grown powerful themselves learning much as underlings to Italy's mafia and now rival the Camorra.

I bought that book. It became my token tome on that subject. I saw the movie with Johnny Depp. It was okay, but it wasn't as good as "Bonnie and Clyde".

I learned that Ma Barker likely never robbed anybody. Her sons and their accomplices did the dirty work. She just hid them from the police. Machine Gun Kelly wasn't very violent, either.

Favorite line from "OH BROTHER WHERE ART THOU" was the one where MGK was in the back seat and shot at some cows. "Oh George, not the livestock" :w00t:

I was doing more reading up on the Nigerian Mafia/Syndicate, they went from being the mules and the intermediates to being the controllers themselves. In fact, they have cut out the middleman (the cocaine cartels itself) and buy straight from the farmers. These are some real sharp people and they are WELL connected because they basically get along with most everyone in transnational organized crime.

The main cocaine routes from South America into Europe is from West Africa into Spain and Italy then redistributed throughout the rest of Europe. The Italian/Sicilian mafia such as Cosa Nostra, Ndrangheta, Camorra, and United Sacred Crown (Sacra Corona Unita) run large parts of the drug trafficking in both Spain and Italy. There is a turf war between the Nigerians and the Camorra in Castel Volturno where there is a huge growing population of lower class Nigerian migrants. Castel Volturno falls within the Camorra territory. The Camorra had the Nigerians run drug trafficking and prostitution rings.

Thanks for the clips and the information, B Jenkins. It's great to learn new things about this subject. The information about Nigerian gangsters is especially fascinating. We now know that they do more than bank scams via emails to naive victims. Thanks for the book and film suggestions too. The movie about Russian gangsters is new to me. Just when I think that there are no mob flicks to watch, that are new to me, I see your recommendations. I'm sure that there are other hidden treasures in this genre.

I dig the Coen Brothers. "Miller's Crossing" is one of the best movies about Irish gangsters.

B Jenkins, you listed some sleepers. "Kill the Irishman" was surprising. I bought the book and the DVD. Neither got much publicity. The same was true for "London Boulevard", which featured Colin Farrell as an English gangster. It had both a modern *and* retro vibe. The director intended it to resemble past films like "Get Carter". You guys likely would have enjoyed it.

I haven't seen London Boulevard, I'll have to look that one up.

Of course there are a series of British crime films out in recent years, Guy Ritchie's Cockney crime capers, Sexy Beast, Gangster No 1, The General, Layer Cake, etc. But Get Carter and The Long Good Friday are definitely the classics. Michael Caine is one of my all time favorite actors indeed.

I think you will enjoy, I thought the first two Guy Ritchie gangster films Lock, Stock, & Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch were quite funny. But then he married Madonna and his films began to suck, other English gangster films he made were Revolver and RocknRolla, same basic stock cast and characters like his earlier films. A bunch of maniacs and underworld screwups all chasing something with the same comic coincidences and misunderstandings etc.

an amazing book about organised crime....probably the best i've read is a book called McMafia by Mischa Glenny.....very very very good.

i kept seeing at airports when i was travelling a lot a while ago....for some reason i thought it was about Scottish gangsters (MCmafia) and so ignored it til someone pointed out that the Mc bit references Macdonalds as a global enterprise...and not...erm....Scottish gangsters <embarrased face>....

anyway here's the link - very very informative...and the chapters about cyber crime are very eye-opening:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/McMafia-without-Frontiers-Misha-Glenny/dp/0224075039

as regards film......if you want to understand OC at a very base level then you can't go far wrong with The Wire....and Scarface is actually about 99% based on fact....they actually had to water some of it down as the truth was less believable than fiction...google 'Mickey Munday' and 'Jon Roberts'...

i used to work in that big building in Layer Cake where the gangsters have the meetings (St*ke Park Club)...the bit at the end where daniel craig gets shot on the steps are the steps i used to walk up every day....fellas who run the club are...erm 'interesting' in themselves but that's another story and one i'm not prepared to discuss on an open forum!

I love Michael Caine. He's great both on and off screen. Madness has a song about him. He speaks during part of it.

"Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" and "Snatch" are in my top ten list of non-Italian/Irish/Jewish gangster movies. As you likely know, real gangsters appear in those films. They give them more authenticity. Ritchie's mob flicks have a certain cool vibe that jibes with me.
