Lethal Virus Sample Vanishes From U.S. Biodefense Lab

March 26, 2013

By Diane Barnes

Global Security Newswire

WASHINGTON -- A high-security biodefense laboratory in Texas has lost track of a lethal hemorrhagic fever virus sample in an incident said to underscore recent government warnings about how the United States oversees the deadly disease agents it holds for study.

In Texas, no doubt!!

I heard about this yesterday. Check out: http://hisz.rsoe.hu/alertmap/index2.php

I also heard about it on infowars.com

Needless to say, because I live in Texas, this has me a little unnerved at the moment.

In Texas, no doubt!!

What's that supposed to mean?

Well, it means, IMHO, that Texas is too casual about their disposal of lethal microbes. I remember when a U. of Texas lab lost anthrax (?) vials, ... during the despised' Bush Oval Office years. It also means to me that we may well see some form of this virus travel the world now. like when they dug up the women who died of the specific flu epidemic (swine, bird, something, Dr. Pat Doyle would know, for i am too lazy to look it all up right now) somewhere around 1918 because they said we had no sample of that virus, only to see it emerge in the world's population some time later, ... again during the despised' Bush Oval Office years.

As to what it really means, ... time will tell.

Well, after reading the article, it doesn't seem like it's specifically one state that has lax rules.

The House Energy and Commerce Committee has begun to scrutinize possible security threats at the nation's biodefense laboratories. The Agriculture Department last year noted failures by its inspectors to identify unauthorized transfers of anthrax and plague samples, and congressional investigators this week released findings that the Obama administration had yet to follow through on their 2009 recommendation to establish a uniform code for planning, constructing and overseeing sensitive biological defense facilities.

Even though the Galveston laboratory incident has generally been attributed to a benign cause, microbiologist John Palisano warned there is "no reason to be cavalier and say we don’t have anything to worry about."

"Sometime, someone’s going to see a lapse in security and then take advantage of it," Palisano, an infectious disease specialist at the University of the South, said in a telephone interview. He called for more frequent federal inspections aimed at ensuring compliance with existing rules.

In the case of such horrible viral diseases that are being stored by the government, don't you think they should have top notch security in place to prevent theft?

One would think so, yes.

But that doesn't seem to be the reality.

In my own state, they are wanting to place a government biolab. Already the issue is fraught with dishonest contracts, old-boy network antics and so on. No, I don't think the proposed lab they want to build here will be safe, placed deep in the heart of the nation's breadbasket.

Also this lab is supposed to be placed near an Al Qaeda camp that we are not officially supposed to know about. But the OK city bombing certainly brought it to light.

I don't find much difference between Bush and Obama these days.

This has happened in other places too. I think any lab in possession of these things need to know where they are. All we need is one of these things to get out and start killing people.

Live samples of a deadly flu virus were recently sent out accidentally to over 5,000 laboratories. Most labs were in the U.S., 14 others were in Canada and 61 were scattered among 16 other countries. As of April 15, almost a week after the laboratories were instructed to destroy the thousands of vials, about a third of them were still unaccounted for.

I seem to remember one in Corning Haselton (east coast, corporate lab), ebola.

Some of these viruses have been weaponized. Let a terrorist get their hands on one of these and millions could die.

Alarm as Dutch lab creates highly contagious killer flu

It doesn't even have to be done by terrorists. There are national factions that would do it, just like armed nukes flew from one end of this country to another, dubiously passing all inspections but the last one, with no mainstream media asking just where those missles were headed. Since terrorism is such a vague term these days, factions of the US military and the US government could fall within that category.

I agree. I now try to look at the issue rather than which side I can blame because that limits solutions when I have to view something as a party platform does. They both have problems is all I can say, IMHO

Uh Oh...."potentially fatal, aerially transmissible pathogens that have no known cure."

that sounds kinda scary

I agree it doesn't have to be a terrorist, it could be any nut out there from any country in the world.

Scary. As a related-note, I'm more concerned about bioterrorism than nuclear.

Me too. And I don't think that our government has our best interests in mind and would indeed use the bioweapons on their own people, if desparate, which they seem to be now.

Over population is seen as a serious issue, I wonder just what 'black' agenda, if any exists concerning possible solutions ?

With fact that the entire populace of Earth could live in 3-bedroom houses in an area the size of US Texas(with not much of a yard, though) "overpopulation" as a whole is not, nor has ever been, the problem; excepting regional circumstances.

Rather, it's environmental resources, jobs, local/regional wars, etc... Those are the real problems.

This planet could easily support 1000 times the amount of people we have now.

So much wasted space where food can be grown, so much wasted manufacturing opportunities. So much wasted, drunk, CEO's of banks and real estate moguls, so much greedy people and governments.

Blah!!! The thoughts are making me sick. End of rant.

Thing is,they are expanding fracking to all the unpopulated areas. Texas the Dakotas ,a few others.

Space is less and less, because the rich need more oil ....feh .

They are playing with fire and a very dangerous game at that. Most of us hope that such discoveries are to help humanity not destroy it. But it seems the powers that be do not care about the rest of us only their own needs and interest. It takes something like this to open peoples minds that not everything the government is messing with is for good purpose and how slack they are at protecting such dangerous materials.

I have heard that the over-population theory is false, that you can fit the entire population of the world into Texas. So I don't worry too much about over population.

While greater the population, the more power the population holds to control it's world.

Sadly, I have only one child. Should have had 15.

Aaargh, damn you overemotional fearmongerers!

Please Don't Panic: A Texas Biodefense Lab Loses A Vial Of Virus

Terrible news! For baby mice.

Call it a bureaucratic coincidence. The same day the Government Accountability Office called for stricter standards at biological threat defense labs, a biodefense lab in Galveston, Texas, lost a vial of virus. Which is a great reason to panic, if you are a baby mouse.

The vial in question contained Guanarito virus, which is found only on the central plains of Venezuela. It causes hemorrhagic fever, which is awful, but it's mostly fatal in baby mice and grown guinea pigs. Adult mice regularly survive it, and inoculated rhesus monkeys exposed to Guanarito in a lab recover just fine. One study found that humans who became infected with the disease suffered a 23 percent fatality rate, but only got exposed to the disease by living near sick rodents--specifically, Venezuelan rats. These rats are the only known hosts for the disease, and without them it's very, very unlikely Guanarito could survive in the wilds of Galveston.

So if the lost virus isn't something out 28 Days Later, why the fuss? Timing, fear, and speculation, mostly. The timing is convenient, because a report published the morning before the Guanarito vial was announced missing highlighted security and other problems at biodefense labs around the country. The second part is fear: a lost sample of Venezuelan rat virus is nothing to panic about, but what if it had been made into a weapon, or bred for bioterror, or was deliberately stolen, or what if it had been something as deadly as anthrax? There's a lot of potential to spread fear in a story about defense research, biological weapons, and mistakes. Speculating about worse outcomes only compounds that.

Truth be told, this was pretty much a best-case scenario. Only under extraordinary circumstances, like if Venezuelan rats invaded Galveston, would the lost vial prove harmful. The loss was discovered during a routine inventory check, which is how mistakes should be found. Human error is inevitable, and proper record-keeping and inventory are the incredibly useful and boring tools used to correct for human error.

In fact, if there's any problem going under-reported in all of this, it's that the number of labs built over a decade of expanded interest in biological defense research leads to more potential for human error. That's simple probability--the more highly sensitive labs you have, the more humans you have working in highly sensitive labs, the greater the likelihood one of them will eventually make a mistake. In fact, in protecting ourselves against threats from malice, we have have exposed ourselves to threats from incompetence. Whoops.

Try to be reasonable for a change instead of p***ing your pants because of a sensational headline. Your psychologies are so freaking textbook. It's even written in the article already.

I don't fall for it either, but over population is discussed, just how serious Gov is about it as a problem I don't know or even if its only used as an excuse, but if it was being used as an excuse for covert methods of euthanasia or population control who knows what measures are taken as a result ?

Human error? then they need to train their staff better. There is no room for human error when working with these kind of things.

Unless they mean they can not always trust who they employ not to sell it to someone else! But I can not see them admitting that one!
