THE FIRE INSIDE (poem)

THE FIRE INSIDE

I have always loved the taste of smokers' kisses.

They are as close as you can get to tasting fire

Without getting burned

Although sometimes you do

Anyway.

It all started, I guess, with Gaulois'

Which he smoked because they seemed exotic

And fitted his Art College, Leonard Cohen life.

He was 17, I was 14, and I thrilled at his first tentative steps in 'daring'.

He was the taste of intimate evenings by a Winter fire .

The softest lips, the kindest heart.

And then came the wild, unfiltered men,

Their burning taste so strong and demanding.

Flicking tongues of flickering flames.

Wildfire doesn't take 'no' for an answer.

This was the over-powering taste of conflagration

Outdoors

In the middle of the night.

The one exception to this smoke-igniting-fire

Was the father of my child

Who, right from the start, tasted of cold ashes,

Of fires extinguished a long time ago.

Cold ash from his skinny mean little black cigars

Smoked in such a tight, inhibited manner

I should have known

I should have been warned.

It's a long time since I tasted fire.

Now there are no kisses, smoky or otherwise

And I am grateful for that because

It means that I never get burned

And my poor heart can relax.

At last.

What if they smoke the electronic cigarettes? Nice poem.

The poem is about a time long before electronic cigarettes were invented!

All right, holy non-smokers, this has gone too far.

Non-smokers, erect numerous monuments to your own greatness. Then try to do something about industrial and traffic pollution. I suggest you stop using any internal combustion engines for starts.

Personally, I can’t stand artificial stinks people spray on them so generously. Most air fresheners give me instant nausea. Where’s the campaign to stop that olfactory crime? Or you seriously think perfumes contain less cancerogenic substances than tobacco?

ouija’s piece – obviously – was about experiencing and associating certain type of personalities with certain type of aroma.

Sudden religious fear of smoking amidst other deadly but socially acceptable pollutions is modern phenomenon that deserves an essay or two, along with other herd mentality issues, but it does not deserve the right to ruin a piece of art.

Trying to ban even mentioning smoking or smokers in art is like clothing naked statues or snipping out passages of “immoral” text, I kid you not.

Thank you so much for dragging me down to the “let’s start explaining art” level.

Good piece, in my opinion, asks for and suffers no analysis. Good piece is instantly felt, and creates its own little fake memory inside reader’s mind.

*stopping the rant* I owe you an apology, ouija, for ranting in your thread, but I want my art uncensored.

On topic.

Great piece, ouija, it transfers the wholeness of your experiences so well. No wonder, since they say the taste can jog our memories better than any other sense.

I'm looking forward to read more of your work.

Funny thing is, I'm not a smoker and I never have been! I've never minded cigarette smoke ..... I find it sort of comforting. My parents didn't smoke either.

Thank you, those who have commented kindly, Helen in particular :D . I totally agree with you Helen, once you start limiting what you write about to make it PC you're doomed. It is also true that the 'civilised' world is now so full of fumes/perfumes of one sort or another that it makes your lungs want to give up! Actually, my nose has given up: I have had no sense of smell for about 20yrs now  .
