Pluto's Gate Uncovered in Turkey

25 posts in this topic

A “gate to hell” has emerged from ruins in southwestern Turkey, Italian archaeologists have announced.

Known as Pluto's Gate -- Ploutonion in Greek, Plutonium in Latin -- the cave was celebrated as the portal to the underworld in Greco-Roman mythology and tradition.

Historic sources located the site in the ancient Phrygian city of Hierapolis, now called Pamukkale, and described the opening as filled with lethal mephitic vapors.

You step inside and die.

I can see why it was considered to be the gateway to the afterlife.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_avernus

Lake Averno - the original gate to hell. (Although, interestingly, it does not seem to be related to the word Inferno.)

this is not a gates to hell. It's just some stupid cave that is full of carbon dioxide. Probably from a lava deep inside the cave. Once again it's all bull, all write up stories, no pictures, no clear and professional investigations, no videos. And for some reason, some members of the public, keeps falling for these kind of stories

You know, I can kinda see this off a back road in Florida: "See! the entrance to the Seminole underworld!"

Did they have tourists and tourist traps back then?

I think it is interesting that these mythological places that have been filed away as legend and nonsense by science in the mainstream, have more and more evidence being discovered for their existence. With these being actual places, it makes you wonder how much other "myth" or "legend" is reality.

I'm so sorry but I have to ask if you're referring to her as a whole, or referring to any of a number of singular orifices?

(The way you worded it made me do it, not my fault!! :su )
