Roscosmos Plans to Join NASA in Asteroid Capture Mission

MOSCOW, April 5 (RIA Novosti) – Russia’s space agency Roscosmos may join NASA’s ambitious mission to capture an asteroid and place it in high lunar orbit for exploration, Roscosmos head Vladimir Popovkin said.

“[it is] a very interesting project, which NASA proposes to carry out jointly with Roscosmos specialists,” Popovkin said in an interview with Rossiiskaya Gazeta newspaper to be published on Friday.

Again a totally meaningless non-contribution. There is no theoretical or technological reason why a small asteroid can not be safely captured and moved into a cis-lunar orbit, unless you have evidence to the contrary.

The only statements that "kinda speak for themselves" seem to be yours.

They already know what sort of minerals exist on asteroids, the same as are found in meteorites.

You are leaping to all sorts of incorrect assumptions here. It's not about help it's about cooperation. Both nations operate independent space agencies. Both have their own individual goals and both have their own budgetary constraints.

Sometimes their goals will overlap and the agencies will cooperate (the ISS being the prime example) and sometimes it will not be in the interest of one and they won't. An example of this would be Exo-Mars, a European mission to Mars. NASA withdrew from the project because, with budget limitations, it was no longer in their interest. Russia joined the project because, with their truely dismal record in Mars exploration, it was worth joining. That is the nature of these things.

Oh and by the way, you may think that NASA is broke but it still has a budget that makes that of Roscosmos look tiny.

to my un-scientific mind, 'capturing' asteroids is comical because I don't see the asteroid resisting.

Furthermore why 'capture' ? Its not an 'enemy' or a 'criminal'

The Asteroid is not dictated by what NASA's or Roscosmos' wants.

Lets see the space cowboys get the coordination right before we get ahead of ourselves here.

Unless they know for sure the density and mass of the thing, its nothing more than 'hoping' they know how to deal with it when the time comes.

10 millions up or down... NASA does only robotics, and doesnt have interest in human exploration..Meanwhile everybody else on globe is making plans for HUMAN exploration. About Mars mission... they withdrew because of budget what a joke so tiny roscomos is making more ambitious plans than rich NASA not mention everyone else.. Rather send a pretty expensive robot up there and achieve absolutely nothing..

While others are trying to push human exploration... you do more and better research that way..
