What urban legends have actually been proven to be true in the past?

Surely if they have been proven to be true they aren't, by definition, urban legends.

Well urban legends from the past have been proven true and are no longer urban legends?

The Legend:

In parts of South America people tell the tale of the fearsome Pishtacos, shadowy figures who stalk peasants along dark roads, kill them and drain them of their fat. Stories of these cholesterol-laden vampires are hard to believe -- Anne Rice and Stephanie Meyer taught us anything, it's that vampires spend most of their time shirtless. How are they going to maintain rippling, six pack abs if they spend all their time drinking liquid fat?

The Truth:

When police arrested the gang which operated deep within the jungle highlands of Peru, they made some grisly discoveries -- a pile of human ribs and thighbones, a decomposing human head, and yes, two plastic Coke bottles filled with what appeared to be human fat. It seems the gang would confront people along the quiet back roads, lure them to their laboratory, bludgeon them to death, dismember them, and then using candles render the fat out of the body, which they captured in a basin below. But what do you do with a bottle of human pan drippings?

The police at first claimed they were selling the fat to cosmetics companies to be used in anti-aging creams. According to the BBC, the liquid fat went for $15,000 per liter on the black market.

Creepy

I read an awful story in an urban legends book about a couple in China who had gone into a restaurant, the woman went to the toilet and never returned, after frantic searching she was not found. Years later she was spotted by a family friend in a traveling circus performing as a human freak, she had no arms, legs or tongue.

I do not know if it was a true story about people being snatched and so hope it was not, but somehow it would not surprise me if it were true, we hear some pretty awful stomach churning stories today now that we have global media which bring us stories from even the remoted villages.

Without linking to reliable sources for 'true' urban legends, they just sound like typical urban legends - very interesting stories entirely lacking in verifiable facts.

Here's a link to a BBC article about the fat for cosmetics murderes in Peru - http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/8369674.stm

Thanks for putting up link to prove it is a verifiable fact.

Here is a link to another story about the circus which is true.

Goliath Bird Eating Spiders were once though to just be a legend...

The idea of a spider 12 inches around that pounded on passing birds sounded like a completely absurd notion, but now they are recognized as an actual species tarantula...

I think he meant that we know spiders that were a lot bigger from millions of years ago. Spiders that could potentially hunt humans (well, our ancestors) since some were the size of our heads. Some people think this is where the irrational fear of spiders subconsciously comes from.
