Londoner 'exhilarated' to learn he is related

A former civil servant said he was "exhilarated" to learn he is related to the US President Abraham Lincoln.

Robert Gilchrist, 61, from Sydenham, south London, is an eighth cousin three times removed of the leader who ruled the country from 1861 to 1865 during its civil war and famously abolished slavery.

He was traced by British genealogist Anthony Adolph, who was tasked by the Illinois Office of Tourism to find descendants of the president in the UK following the success of the Hollywood film Lincoln, which earned Daniel Day-Lewis an Oscar for portraying him.

I'm a descendant of Rollo the Pig herder...

Not many others in my lineage got quite that high on the social ladder...

seriously though... it would be really cool to find something like that out...

My actual family (clan) is one of the oldest traceable ones in Western Europe - or so I'm told, just not sure exactly how I fit into it as there is a record break in my line caused by Sherman's March to the Sea during the Civil War (lots of records burned in courthouses)... and some confusion about which of several individuals is a direct ancestor who actually came over from Ireland...

But the village idiot is the only person in a town who is genuinely happy...

Don't decry the Village Idiot...it takes dedication and years of experience.

Aha - The Black Douglas.......I know him well.

"Sir, you see,

How the English tyrant forcibly

Has dispossessed me of my land

And you are made to understand

That the earl of Carrick claims to be

The rightful king of this country.

The English, since he slew that man,

Are keen to catch him if they can;

And they would seize his lands as well

And yet with him I faith would dwell!

Now, therefore, if it be your will,

With him will I take good or ill.

Through him I hope my land to win

Despite the Clifford and his kin."

The Brus by John Barbour

(The Black Douglas to his friend William Lamberton, Bishop of St.Andrews)

Apparently I am a descendant from some guy called Adam and his misses called Eve, but have found nothing to prove it, so I reckon some-one was having it up my back.

Me and my husband are both descendants of Robert the Bruce. My husband is descended from many of the great Scottish Noble Clans such as the Douglas's, Campbell's, Ruthven's, etc....It gets confusing sometimes.

I'm descended from the Noble house of Stewart/Stuart.

That's pretty cool. :tu:

My uncle learned that Edgar Allan Poe is a distant cousin on my father's side.
