Rare bees ‘are facing wipe-out’

4 posts in this topic

THE scale of the crisis facing Britain’s bees was revealed yesterday – and it goes far beyond the plight of honeybees.

In the past century the UK has lost 20 of its 250 species, said a study.

Lesser known species such as the great yellow bumblebee, large mason bee and potter flower bee are barely surviving.

I've noticed there aren't a lot of bumble bees around here.

When I was running a flea market I kept the front door open and a news bee, not sure of the formal name, would come to visit me on a daily basis and just hover in front of me looking at me. On days that were slow I found myself talking to it. :)

I think I saw maybe 3 bumble bees here the entire summer last year. Not sure about the honey bees. We're planting some wildflowers in a sunny area of the yard in a few weeks for them. The wasps are all over the place though, I've been stung once already this year. Buggars!
