Wild lynx to be brought back to Britain

9 posts in this topic

Wild lynx could be allowed to roam the British countryside for the first time in almost 1,000 years under plans by a group of leading wildlife experts.

Senior biologists and cat specialists are this week due to apply for a license to reintroduce the cats, which can grow up to four feet in length, into an area of forest on the west coast of Scotland.

I'm all for conservation etc, but wouldn't the eco system have changed and evolved. Surely doing this would mess that up?

This is great news for UM. Keep you eyes open for the "strange creature spotted" threads folks.

Will keep this thread in my (keep this thread for future reference to debunk the strange creature spotters) file.

If it kills grouse the 'chaps' or their minions will soon blow their brains out.

These 'leading wildlife experts' who in their wisdom decide it's ok to reintroduce wild animals like Lynx, Wolves and Bear into the British countryside...I wonder how many of them live in big towns or cities! It's easy to make such decisions when you don't live in the areas where they're being released.

Slightly off-topic - zebra99, you have a lovely signature :)

and what are supposed to eat big cats like that? I like the idea of reintroducing some species, but is there enough to feed them like 1000 years ago? if they attack cattle, dogs, sheep .. surely farmers won´t take too long to shoot them till the last one is killed

Big? Lynx are quite small. Most of them are only a tad bigger than a (bigger) house cat, and the big ones are about the size of a German Shepherd (which is extremely rare, though), but also a lot lighter.

They also do not hunt animals as big as deer. Foxes, rabbits, the babies of bigger animals, that is what they go after.
