God particle 'overhyped'

10 posts in this topic

Peter Higgs, the British academic after whom the particle is named, said it is being used by scientific institutions to justify massive research budgets.

He warned that media interest in the Higgs boson was distorting the public's understanding of that area of science by dominating publicity.

In particular Professor Higgs singled out the CERN research organisation, which runs the £6 billion Large Hadron Collider, for criticism and urged them to spend more time promoting other projects.

Well said Peter.

The 83-year-old scientist, who lives in Edinburgh, insisted the reference was not funny and was actually misleading.

He came up with the theory of a subatomic particle, since dubbed the Higgs boson, which would explain the mystery of how things have mass.

But the professor wants people to stop referring to it as the "God particle" because he does not believe the particle holding the physical fabric of the universe together is the work of one almighty creator.

According to Prof Higgs, the nickname actually started as a joke, adding that it was "not a very good one".

The phrase was created for a popular science book from 1993 by Leon Lederman, a Nobel Prize-winning physicist, and Dick Teresi, a science writer.

DArk matter is all well and good as long as they don't start looking for anti-matter inside the dark.

Scientists don't generally resort to hype, and obviously Dr. Higgs has had his fill of it regarding his work. The problem is that politics is all about hype, and, when scientists need government money, they have to get into politics.

The Higgs boson is definitely NOT over-hyped - and in fact should have been a much bigger deal than it was. Even for the laymen like myself, I can see the great benefits of understanding where mass derives from in its particle form. If we know where mass derives from, we can attain a much better understanding about Gravity - well eventually.

The biggest issue with a discovery of this magnitude is no one knows what the Higgs Boson is...and many just don't care unless they are holding the technology in their hands. What a shame.

Peter Higgs: stop calling it the god particle Started by , Apr 09 2013 07:53 AM http://www.unexplained-mysteries.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=246007 - listen, guys - if the guy who postulated the Higgs boson doesn't want the term 'God particle' to be used, then why are you asking this stupid question? Of course, it is overhyped by people like you. The Higgs boson is definitely not overhyped.

That's not really what the article the OP posted is about. Dr. Higgs doesn't like that scientific institutions are using the Higgs-Boson to increase the size of their budgets.

Who are you referring to when you say "people like you". Nobody in this thread called it the God Particle, or argued a case for calling it that.

The "God particle" is overhyped, just like "God" is overhyped.

What question are you seeing?
