Waspie_Dwarf Posted July 3, 2013 #1 Share Posted July 3, 2013 Mars Rover Opportunity Passes Half-Way Point to Next Destination PASADENA, Calif. - NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity has driven more than half of the distance needed to get from a site where it spent 22 months to its next destination.The rover has less than half a mile (800 meters) to go to finish a 1.2-mile (2-kilometer) dash from one crater-rim segment, where it worked since mid-2011, to another, where mission controllers intend to keep Opportunity busy during the upcoming Martian winter. We need to know that Mars was even capable of supporting simple life before we look for fossils of complex life. These missions are to determine whether such conditions ever actually existed in the past (and the evidence is mounting that they were). Maybe future missions will search for fossils, but it may have to wait until either robotic missions are able to return samples to Earth or for a manned mission there.
