Ireland legalises abortion for the first time

4 posts in this topic

The Irish Government has passed landmark legislation today to allow abortion in the country in certain circumstances.

The laws enshrine a woman's right to a termination if her life is at risk, including if she is at risk of taking her own life.

The Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill 2013 was passed comfortably at about 12.30am today after a second late night of debates, with 127 members of the Dail parliament voting in favour and just 31 against.

In practical terms I don't expect things will be much different for women in Ireland. If a woman is Roman Catholic it will be very difficult for her to say that she's thinking of committing suicide(if that's the only way to get the abortion she wants), because of the pregnancy because would I be right in thinking that suicide is regarded as a sin by Catholics?

The Roman Catholic Taoiseach was in a very difficult position: damned by some if he didn't support the bill, damned by others if he did.

Of course suicide is a sin, according to Catholics, but the worst part is that you’re dead so you can’t confess and repent it.

Abortion and lying are sins too, but the woman is still alive so she can confess and repent.

This will make almost no difference on the ground. Doctors will still be handing out information packs on how to procure an abortion in England.

This whole affair has been another example of Irelands rank hypocrisy.
