CME To Pass Earth, Messenger and Juno

On July 16, 2013, at 12:09 a.m. EDT, the sun erupted with an Earth-directed coronal mass ejection or CME, a solar phenomenon that can send billions of tons of particles into space that can reach Earth one to three days later. These particles cannot travel through the atmosphere to harm humans on Earth, but they can affect electronic systems in satellites and on the ground.

Experimental NASA research models, based on observations from NASA’s Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory, show that the CME left the sun at speeds of around 560 miles per second, which is a fairly typical speed for CMEs.

Good grief!

You are happily filling the site with crackpot theories but you are unaware of something as basic as the fact that we are close to maximum in the sun's 11 year cycle.

Is the number of CME's directed towards Earth the same as in previous 11 year cycles or not?

I have no idea. If you want to know YOU do the research.

Edited to add:

It is important to remember that 2002 there were fewer satellites examining the sun and so warnings of incoming CME's were rarer. The internet was far less advanced and so even when such forecasts were made it was not so easy for members of the public to see those predictions virtually instantly as they can now.

These are factors you would need to take into account.

Of course you could just ignore the facts and end everything you say with "imv".

The information is certainly out there, here is just 1 example for 4 Jan 2002:

"The images from the LASCO coronagraph show a very rapidly expanding coronal mass ejection (CME) blasting billions of tons of particles out from the Sun at about 3.5 million kilometers per hour. The complex structures are caused by magnetic filed structures that were ejected from the Sun."

Why can't the data be represented in a simple graph? The number of CMEs directed at Earth in 11 year cycles against the year? Too difficult to do is it?

You want someone to do your work for you. If you can find the raw data then it shouldn't be difficult for you to produce the graph yourself.

Anyway, what it tell you?

For someone that claims to have been a science officer you show a distinct lack of scientific thinking.

If the number of CME's aimed at the Earth has increased this cycle then so what? It would mean nothing if the total number of CME's had risen by the same proportion.

You would need to know what the total number of CMEs were. What percentage were aimed at the Earth and what percentage would be expected to be aimed at the Earth in order to know if there was anything significant going on.

And you are going to need to do it for several cycles to show, statistically, that there is more than random chance going on.

Good luck with that.
