Likely Guy Posted July 26, 2013 #2 Share Posted July 26, 2013 No, but my pareidolia kicked in and it looks like a cheery face. Might I ask the reason why you ask?

ShadowSot Posted July 26, 2013 #4 Share Posted July 26, 2013 It was a symbol on the bottom of an old piece of pottery, struck me as strange. How old? DO you have a picture? Where did you find it?
Likely Guy Posted July 26, 2013 #5 Share Posted July 26, 2013 It was a symbol on the bottom of an old piece of pottery, struck me as strange. Then it could upside down or either ways sideways. Shadowsot's right, context is everything.
DemonicCupcake Posted July 26, 2013 Author #6 Share Posted July 26, 2013 I do not have it. I was at an antique shop. I chose buying a cheaper cup and saucer set over it (I collect china, and my funds were a few dollars short of purchasing it) It APPEARED to be an older piece, but I can not be certain. It was a bowl, probably about 10 inches across. Fairly certain it was milk glass. I love researching symbols and whatnot, so I pulled a pen and a napkin out of my purse and scribbled it down. ShadowSot Posted July 26, 2013 #7 Share Posted July 26, 2013 If it's glass, it's probably not terribly old. Other than that, with it being at an antique store there's a lot of context that'll be missing, so without knowing much about glassware I can't help much. Might want to see if you can find a forum for antiquities or glass dealers and see what you can find. Might want to look up the major milk glass dealers and see what they use as a label. CHRIS_UK Posted July 29, 2013 #12 Share Posted July 29, 2013 As far as i'm aware they use/used marks as date references in Europe for pottery, after a quick search on google the closest i can find to that is this: http://www.google.co.uk/search?um=1&rlz=1W4CHBA_enGB542&biw=1280&bih=855&hl=en&tbm=isch&sa=1&q=american+pottery+symbols&oq=american+pottery+symbols&gs_l=img.3..0i5.3419.7535.0.10537.24.24.0.0.0.0.113.2127.21j3.24.0.crnk_timecombined...0...1.1.22.img..0.24.2124.oTVqvlGjBeI#facrc=_&imgdii=_&imgrc=Alk26InQlHwoHM%3A%3B-iIKh2awdp_hiM%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fnavajopeople.org%252Fimages%252Fsymbolism.jpg%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fnavajopeople.org%252Fnavajo-pottery.htm%3B300%3B386 To be honest you should do some research yourself see what you can find, would be interesting to know exactly what it is. Oniomancer Posted July 29, 2013 #14 Share Posted July 29, 2013 That's a pretty common design motif in Native American art, especially southwest pottery. It's often called a step pattern and does appear to have some minor symbolism varying from tribe to tribe: http://www.math.tamu.edu/~dallen/masters/american/parr.pdf

jules99 Posted July 31, 2013 #16 Share Posted July 31, 2013 Hi; What colour is your bowl? Milk glass is usually opaque and Ive seen it in white, pale blue, pale green and swirled combinations of these colours. Its not particularly fine, usually cast/molded, mass production glass though some are nice quality. Fenton, a US manufacturer usually marked their wares with their name in an oval. Looking at the mark youve provided I would suspect the bowl may not be milk glass...most of it is unmarked.. Cheers and good luck
