British Launch Criminal Investigation Into David Miranda Files

Reuters | Posted: 08/22/2013 2:10 pm EDT

Counter-terrorism detectives said they had begun a criminal investigation following a preliminary examination of the material taken from David Miranda, partner of American journalist Glenn Greenwald, after he was held for nine hours at London's Heathrow Airport on Sunday.

"Initial examination of material seized has identified highly sensitive material, the disclosure of which could put lives at risk," London's Metropolitan Police said in a statement.

"Initial examination of material seized has identified highly sensitive material..."

I'll believe it when I see it.

Govt must understand they have lost the trust of the people, and trying to win back that trust via accusations of treason, spying, etc just will not cut it.

The only way for govt to begin to win back that trust, is to be much more open and straightforward.

why is the default stance to automatically question the authorities are we getting into the realms of fantasy. why is it so hard to believe this journalist has sensitive information. his partner and himself have admitted it. didnt you see the footage at the airport were is gay lover made a direct threat to release information which would embarrass the uk government in retaliation for his partner being questioned.

I don't care if a journalist has information which is 'sensitive' and might "embarrass" the govt. That material is not illegal - only inconvenient to those in power.

If someone has material which is illegal for good reason - i.e. it actually physically endangers someone - then I can understand the need for classification. But we have no evidence any of the material seized does endanger others, and our govt has a track record of lying to get what it wants.

Embarrass away, I say. Let the public see what our politicians are really up to, and what pies they really have their fingers in.

the information they have is illegal it was leaked. by someone who was entrusted. today the guardian have released a piece of information. that is the uk government wants to set up a listening post in the middle east. for the majority of people they wouldn't give it any thought its nothing to write home about. but for the guardians 2 million readers it'll have them choking on their muesli. the conspiracy theorists will also be hand wringing.

Just as you have a right to your privacy, so does any State - regardless whether their ideology conforms with our own. All this hyperbole about "intelligence" is just an excuse for power-games and meddling. If we want to do business with another State, then we should do business with them. How they behave in the privacy of their own backyard/bedroom is none of our concern, except we can (perhaps) seek to set ourselves as an example for how a modern, civilised State should behave.

If we have good reason to believe abuses are being carried out in a State, then we are capable of making a moral/ethical decision to have nothing to do with them, or even protesting via channels (the UN) which were set up for the peaceful (note: peaceful does not mean "always favourable to the UK or US") resolution of such disagreements. We can even, in co-operation with other like-minded States, agree to accept refugees escaping this abuse and thus, hopefully, peacefully weaken that abusive State beyond viability.

If the People of any State are fed up with how that State treats them, they have options of revolution/overthrowing that State - peacefully or not. I am not saying it's perfect, and I'm not saying it painless, but it's the best solution we have for all concerned.

But our glorious leaders are more concerned with waving their own d!cks about and proving how great they are as "world leaders", than about actually trying to make progress towards a more peaceful, tolerant, planet.

The NSA, a.k.a. "Wicked Witch of the West," can threaten all she wants to, but the people are beginning to wake up from that spell, and the one who arguably saw it coming ... you should have hired for 200k a year, instead of Frosty the Snowman.

"Friend of Dorothy" - In gay slang, a "friend of Dorothy" (occasionally abbreviated FOD) is a term for a gay man.

I wish I had some words of advice for our military and state department, as I hear that their "crystal's gone dark."

Note: "El reno" is a Spanish term meaning "reindeer". It is also the name of a town in Oklahoma.

couldn't be! But it is! No, it isn't! Yes,

it is! Oh, maybe that'll help!

The Brits should familiarize themselves with the "Friends of Dorothy" before deciding to lock them up for simply trying to warn everybody.

After the tornado takes Dorothy to Oz, she is imprisoned in the the castle of the Wicked Witch of the West. Then something miraculous happens. Something to do with water.

There is a curious parallel, published here in 2011, in terms of the consequences for not listening to the spokesman of the earth. The warning was repeated again here on May 15, 2013 - 01:23 AM, with an even more ominous tone, and again on the following day with an even better description of what's about to happen, including the name of the band that would sing the tune.

The warning specifically says what would follow the wind, if the secret police in the U.S. did not listen, and it has arguably come to pass, because with the help of the "Friends of Dorothy," a.k.a. the "friends of the wind," the water has been thrown.

The Wicked Witch isn't dead yet, so it's a bit early to be saying "Hail to Dorothy," but who can doubt that the earth is behind her?

Word has reached my ears that the U.S. government classified 16 million documents last year. That's 20 top secret documents generated for each one of these 800,000 with top level clearance.

For every U.S. government employee with top secret clearance, send ten friends of the wind to whisper in one ear, but if they cannot hear my voice then send ten thousand to blow trumpets in both ears, and if they still don't hear me, then let the earth speak with a single voice of many waters, until their own thoughts are completely drowned out.
