UM-Bot Posted October 21, 2004 #1 Share Posted October 21, 2004 Image credit: NASA Advocates of a propulsion idea for spacecraft claim that it would enable a 90-day round trip to Mars. Using current technology, it would take astronauts about 2.5 years to travel to Mars, conduct their mission and return to Earth, US scientists estimate. It would use a space station to fire a beam of magnetised particles at a solar sail mounted on a spacecraft. This plasma beam would then make use of repulsive forces to propel the spacecraft along at high speeds. Magnet Posted October 21, 2004 #2 Share Posted October 21, 2004 Very intresting news. Too bad that it will be around in 5 years. I hope they find some life in Mars sometime. Wasn't in Mars where they found water? Water means life, right?
Skela Posted October 21, 2004 #3 Share Posted October 21, 2004 They found evidence of water in the past. Water could mean life. And yeah they will find life on Mars some day, it's just a question of time.

AztecInca Posted October 22, 2004 #5 Share Posted October 22, 2004 Well if they can master this technology and get it to work correctly and efficently for when we finally send a manned misson to mars, then it would be a gerat idea!
Dowdy Posted October 22, 2004 #6 Share Posted October 22, 2004 Project leader Robert Winglee of the University of Washington estimates that a control nozzle 32m wide would generate a plasma beam capable of propelling a spacecraft at 11.7km/second. well, space craft and satelites go around the Earth at 7km a second
LucidElement Posted October 23, 2004 #7 Share Posted October 23, 2004 that is interesting, our technology is really flying these days.. but they need to slow down!!! before we really have a problem!!!
