There was no collapse because "the American Dream" was only ever that - a dream. It has never been a reality to collapse.

The "American Dream" factually existed, but in as many versions as there were Americans and immigrants at a time.

There was a second thingy called "American Dream" but that was largely a sales tool telling you what you needed to keep up with your neighbor. They just repeated it long enough until everybody started believing it was "their" dream.

Pretty sure the most commonly accepted version of the "American Dream" was a "chicken in every pot and car in every garage".

That was Herbert Hoover's version of it.

I would suggest the dream you speak of did not start in America, but has existed as long as there have been people to dream of freedom. That dream has never been the "American Dream", though America would like to co-opt it as their own.

Egads talk about first world problem. That we're in an economic downturn isn't in question, where that economic downturn exists in a historical context is something we won't be able to calculate for at least 50 years. Having said that we aren't living in some Mad Max wasteland either. I'm sort of confused as to the gloom and doom attitude some people have attached to this time we're living in when times have been much much worse. We're losing the people who went through the Great Depression but some are still around. Go to your local rest home or grandparents house and ask them how it felt to go through the Great Depression. Better yet sit down on Youtube and see how other people around the world live right now in some areas with little or no comforts or luxuries and then go sit in a mall or a grocery store and tell me how the American Dream is dead.

Not sure how many have actually watched the video....I know, 30 minutes of your time is asking alot these days.

It's surprisingly well done, funny and pretty accurate.

Jefferson will always be my favorite Founding Father. He was a human being, he was not perfect...but there is so many of his words that I agree with...I am capable of looking beyond his very "human" flaws.

I do not hate Andrew Jackson either...another flawed human. He did terrible things in the name of "manifest destiny"...but his position against the banking system should never be forgotten. "Old Hickory" was a giant personality...I know of know one else that could have done what he did at the Battle of New Orleans...look it up sometime...

I guess the only thing left to do is get the rope....time to hang some bankers and their defenders....the lawyers, lobbyist and the legislators they have bought and paid for....Federal Reserve investors....you are next....

That's interesting. Now Americans are entitled to just about everything. It's fun to make fun of what the American Dream has turned into. An ipad, iphone, bluetooth, Amazon prime account, a home, a car, health insurance, retirement money, economic bailouts, financial ponzi schemes, interest rate and price fixing, warfare by design, air conditioning, netflix, cheap clothes made in Chinese sweat shops at Walmart, food stamps, tax writeoffs for the babies and hopefully a baby daddy. Are we happy with all that yet? Hell no we want $15.00/hr to clean bathrooms and flip burgers at McDonalds.

Welcome to consumer capitalism. It's like a water-slide, you start at the top and end up at the bottom - except the pool there has no water in it.

The American dream is long gone, because in order to have and realize a dream, there must be opportunity for it. I think we all know how well the economy has been as of late. No opportunity equals no more dreams.

Voodoo, you'll have to re-explain that, as it made no sense to me.

Do you mean to say that, 'someone who doesn't understand the problem, can't solve the problem'?

I don't know... I'm at a loss.

That's correct..... Not as long as the socalled too bigs get all the breaks and bailed out by politicians who used to chief co these companies. These individuals are criminals. They're screwing everybody else ability to compete with them on a level playing field.
