I wonder why they think they could grow up to 45feet long? I suppose skeletons have been found washed up on beaches.

They have found 30 foot specimens washed up. Since fish continually grow throughout there lives its not hard to see one growing to 45 feet.

I think inspiration for dragons in the ancient world, came from sightings of giant oar fish, but that's my own opinion.
