'Han Solo' photographed on Mercury

42 posts in this topic

NASA's Messenger spacecraft has caught an unusual looking shape on the nearest planet to the sun.

Launched in 2004, the eagle-eyed probe has managed to capture many photographs of the planet's surface including one shot which includes a particularly familiar looking shape that seems at first glance to be somewhat out of place.

It looks a bit like that astrofrog in that other thread a few days ago.

I suppose it'll 'spawn' a whole lot of new theories!

If you squint at it you can sort of see a "Han Solo encased in carbonite" shape.

Han was rescued from the carbonite.

That's what "they" want you to believe. I can't believe you fell for rebel propaganda.

But on a serious note -

Are there other images? Any color images?

Of this object? I don't know, but probably, Messenger has been orbiting Mercury since March 2011. I suspect that with different lighting angles and shadows it wouldn't look like this though.

As for colour... to be honest Mercury is very like the Moon, grey in colour. Colour images (except when the colours are exaggerated) look a lot like monochrome.

Nah, not just of that image. Just interesting bits of the planet.

What's our most colorful planet?

Yes but that is not a true colour picture. It is enhanced, the colours are highly exaggerated to show up small differences that the human eye could not otherwise detect. It enables scientists to determine mineral types.
