Planned censorship of "esoteric" websites!

Dear friends,

I wanted to share with the community here an important issue that's going to affect anybody interested in free access to spirituality or web forums online: The UK Internet censorship bill. Its been launched as a censor against child pornography websites to protect our children, however what is not known about it is that esoteric websites and internet forums are also included in the bill - without being publicly announced... Spiritual, occult and esoteric websites are conveniently being categorised to the same degree as pornography, terrorism, violence, suicide etc…! This means that all paranormal, supernatural, occult, new age, spiritual, alternative religion websites etc... will soon be banned from public viewing in the UK (and it may very well be an example for other countries to follow, as Canada and Australia have already announced similar plans) if we don't do anything about it. If this matters to you please help spread the word so we can all group together and stand up to this bill.

The infographic below summarizes in a simple way what's going on. Feel free to add it to your website if you wish to raise awareness about this issue. It is a courtesy of reachinglight website and you can get a free copy here: http://www.reachingl...e-implications/

Thank you and blessings!

Saskia

I'm not convinced that the definition of "esoteric" here means every site about the paranormal, religion etc. There really needs to be some clarification as to what exactly is meant by esoteric in the context of these new filters.

"Web forums" as a block category makes even less sense, what about Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, YouTube etc. ? "Web forum" isn't even a content category, it's a type of service like "blog" or "news site" that in no way reflects what that site or forum is about or what topics are covered. A default block on all sites with discussion facilities would leave a large percentage of the Internet inaccessible.

I can't imagine something like this would ever go ahead - it would be political suicide.

Um.... if it were true, this website would vanish too.

ohh look, Captain Budgie-Smugglers (aka Prime Minister Tony Abbott) is mentioned as having a web filtering plan too.

I forgot about that one in the barrage of "we're stopping the boat people!" (done, incidentally, by stopping the press releases about boat arrivals) and shouts of sexism directed at his party and my personal outrage at the loss of the Minister for Science and the spot in the ministry being replaced by a minister for SPORT.

This made me laugh, what are all the 'doer's going to use when they implement the rule change then, some secret forum?

Hmm... Did the twit putting the bill together make an error - wouldn't be the first time - and doesn't know the spelling difference between esoteric and erotic?

Wouldn't surprise me. Either that or they think esoteric sounds fancier and a bit like erotic so it's probably just a better word to use :P

Not just political suicide, Saru, but the first legal challenge would result in the sorry mess collapsing like the house of cards it is.

I've given up being surprised when our politicians make a complete pig's ear out of running this country - I'm more surprised on the few occasions they actually get things right.

I wondered this as well. The only censorship thing I've heard about recently had to do with pornography (it is pretty rampant online).

Is this true? I can't find any official stuff about it. When I did a search what came up was forums going on about it and all links going back to the site you posted.

Pornography is just the tool they are using to push though laws to allow internet censorship..The end goal is to get rid of any form of free speech the government doesn't like. The way the act is written is purposely vague to allow them to close pretty much any website, forum or blog they want to.
