US braces for possible government shutdown

695 posts in this topic

The US government is bracing for a possible shutdown, as Republicans and Democrats in Congress remain deadlocked on a budget to continue its funding.

Agencies have begun making contingency plans ahead of the 1 October deadline to pass a new funding resolution.

The Senate has passed a bill to fund the government until 15 November.

But House Republicans have said they refuse to approve the bill without a provision to strip funding from President Barack Obama's health law.

Democrats are more than happy to raise the debt ceiling so that we can pay bills for services already purchased. Republicans do not.

"Paying bills" on a credit card makes no sense. They have to raise the debt precisely because they're not paying the bills.

Basically the house(ran by republicans) and senate(ran by democrats) are playing hot potato right now.

No one wants to be the party that votes down the budget and causes the government to shut down.

The senate amends the bill and sends it to the house. The house will amend it and send it to the senate.

Each one amends it with want they want and the other doesn't except it

It is a game of hot potato.

The republicans actually have been acting fairly reasonable to me.

They are going to send a separate bill along with the budget to get voted on saying that even if the government gets shut down the military still gets paid. And they added to postpone the implementation of Obama care for a year so that both parties can agree on a budget and just vote on Obama care funding later.

Lets see if the senate actually takes the compromise.

It is not wise to confront a sitting president, and generally politically disastrous. He has far more resources for reaching the public and can speak with a unified voice. The general public sees the effects of the conflict but never understands the subtleties.

Therefore the Republicans can be as pure as new-fallen snow and still get trumped and slaughtered in the next election if they cause disruptions to people's lives.

Democrats are more than happy to put your great grand children in debt to pay for their idiotic ideas. Republicans aren't much better.

Emphasis on this.

This deserves all the one-ups.

Lets see how happy everybody is when they have to pull the inspectors from the food processing plants and the supermarket shelve is empty.

Fear...

Logically, if there were no gov inspectors then likewise there would be no gov to enforce a shut down of food processing plants.

We'd move along like we used to before gov intervention.

If it was not the case that those guys condemn meat and produce daily that otherwise ends up on the shelve I would agree with you. Problem is that there is a good reason for them to be there in our industrialized agriculture.

What is more likely is that the government would move to make them self funded through fees and fines.....

Yeah and if they're not paid for with debt (children's future wages paying off debt plus interest) somehow they won't exist? As if the market doesn't regulate itself....it needs men in suits to tell it where the lines and loops are.

Nobody will be careful what they put in their mouths without the bureau keeping them safe. How freaking liberal and trusting in government some people are in the wake of so much failure, dishonesty, stupidity, hypocrisy, violence, elitism, corruption, ponzi schemes and fear mongering I feel very sorry for your brainwashing, slaves.

Basically, the Republicans are trying to compromise, but the Democrats want to shove Obamacare with all it's kinks down everyone, except the big rich corporations who are exempt, throats. Edit to add: They also put in the bill, a repeal of the medical device tax, which is hurting a lot of people.

Exactly! :tu:

Do you call Visa up after you max out your credit limit, and ask for a higher credit limit?? No, they'd laugh at you.

The per-person debt of the United States now stands 35 percent higher than that of Greece, tallying $53,400 for every single American.

The debt ceiling is nothing to do about spending. It's about paying for bills already acquired.

Wow your thoughts are so clouded by partisan propaganda.

First off the republicans want to defund Obama care. That is the primary goal. And obviously the democrats do not.

The republicans tried to pass a budget but it excluded finace for Obama care so the democrats amended it and sent it to the house.

The republicans are sending a second bill back to the senate along with their amended budget plan. The second bill is to allow the military to get paid even if the government shuts down and to postpone the implementation of obamacare for another year so that both parties can agree on a budget.

To me the republicans seem like the ones compromising.

If the democrats shoot down the compromise that the republican house is about to send to the democrat senate then it will be very clear that the democrats are the ones not compromising who will end up shutting down the government.

Your blind party loyalty sometimes amazes me

You're the one who pushes free market ideology like it benefits the people and not the corporations, and like it actually works. The repeal of Glass-Steagall is responsible for the last two recessions, not debt or federal spending. The fed failed in their job of protecting the people from criminals and the people failed in their job of ensuring a functioning federal government.

If the past is prelude (and I think it will be) then this shutdown will secure a Democrat majority in both houses next election. It should be interesting to see them squabbling over who can spend (borrow) the most money and for which projects. The whole situation has become surreal. The public elected them and when the house of cards crashes it will be well deserved. The whole world will suffer when the US economy finally crashes and burns. I wonder if anyone will give a damn to hear the Dems STILL complaining that somehow Bush and the evil republicans set it all in motion?

In order for it to be a compromise both sides have to get something and lose something. The republicans get Obamacare defunded and lose what? The opportunity to shut down the government?

Getting something in exchange for not doing harm isn't called compromise. I believe the word is extortion.
