Still Waters Posted October 9, 2013 #1 Share Posted October 9, 2013 A plant nursery has become the first in Britain to grow BLACK tomatoes. The unusual fruit, which has a jet black skin, is among the first in the world to contain anthocyanins, an antioxidant thought to have a number of health benefits. http://uk.news.yahoo...ml?vp=1#8aH6A1l
Drayno Posted October 9, 2013 #2 Share Posted October 9, 2013 When I see the color black I automatically compare it with rot. This is neat, but to me it's very unappetizing.
rashore Posted October 9, 2013 #3 Share Posted October 9, 2013 That's rather nice. I like the indigo series of tomatoes, very interesting for something different in the garden, and great for Halloween salads Especially when paired with a good orange tomato, they can make a lovely tomato plate display. The cherry version is super cute with orange cherries too.

Did you see it's only the outer skin that is black? The interior is still the normal red colouring.
freetoroam Posted October 9, 2013 #5 Share Posted October 9, 2013 The plant nursery were not the first, it says it in the article. They can not claim health benefits yet either!

DecoNoir Posted October 9, 2013 #7 Share Posted October 9, 2013 I'd eat it, no problem. I've put way weirder, and worse, into my belly.
Oppono Astos Posted October 9, 2013 #8 Share Posted October 9, 2013 Tried growing some of these at home a good many years back (plant bought from garden center), didn't fare well in greenhouse.

rodentraiser Posted October 10, 2013 #10 Share Posted October 10, 2013 I don't know. They look sort of like blackberries. I finally found chocolate colored cherry tomatoes at a Farmer's Market and they were yummy.
