Still Waters Posted November 19, 2013 #1 Share Posted November 19, 2013 Magnapinna squids are one of the deep-sea more ethereal creatures. Little is known of these squid as very few have ever been captured, although over the last decade with the increased usage of remotely operated vehicles (ROV) and submersibles more and more video is emerging of them. They are unusual in both that the fins are up to 90% of the length of the body, i.e. the mantle, and the ridiculously long length of the arms. The squid often will hold some of the arms at a 90 degree angles from the side of the body. http://deepseanews.c...-big-fin-squid/ http://en.wikipedia....ki/Bigfin_squid

Duchess Gummybuns Posted November 20, 2013 #12 Share Posted November 20, 2013 I'm telling you guys, this is the start of something. First, they'll find things washed up on shore with human AND squid DNA. Next thing you know, it's a Squidulon/Octoid uprising. Keep calling me crazy. At least I, for one, will welcome our new cephalopodian overlords.
Sundew Posted November 20, 2013 #13 Share Posted November 20, 2013 I would be curious to know what it eats. They recently discovered that the Vampire Squid eats only non living "marine snow" making it the only known cephalopod that does not capture live prey. And it does so with a long thread-like feeding tentacle. Here you have an animal with multiple thread-like tentacles. Makes me wonder if it too feeds on detritus, passing it up to the mouth along the tentacles.

Chooky88 Posted November 22, 2013 #21 Share Posted November 22, 2013 Awesome. Love the stiff first part of the tentacles, evolved into a squid but devolved I to feeding like a jellyfish.
