Dark matter is the vast majority of the mass of the entire universe and holds the galaxies together.

Things are not what they seem -- really not.

I know little of science... can someone please explain how it is known, or how the theory came about, that there is such a thing as dark matter separating the universes, or that the separation of the universes even exist?

First dark matter does not separate the universes but appears to be the main source of mass in our universe. It is "dark" because we can't see it -- it neither gives off nor reflects light. The conclusion that it exists and is so pervasive comes from measurements of how things move and hold together -- there is a lot of matter holding the galaxies and so on together that we can calculate must exist but we cannot account for from what we see.

If there is more than one universe (since "universe" means "all that exists," I would prefer to say if there is more than one "cosmos"), they are in different dimensions and technically could not possibly interact, even if they were right on top of each other (if such a statement even means anything).

Its a pretty long story ... started when the universe was found to be not only expanding but also speeding apart ... most of it was mathematical equations and numbers till :

The Dark Energy Survey (DES) is designed to probe the origin of the accelerating universe and help uncover the nature of dark energy by measuring the 14-billion-year history of cosmic expansion with high precision. More than 120 scientists from 23 institutions in the United States, Spain, the United Kingdom, Brazil, and Germany are working on the project. This collaboration is building an extremely sensitive 570-Megapixel digital camera, DECam, and will mount it on the Blanco 4-meter telescope at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory high in the Chilean Andes. Starting in Sept. 2012 and continuing for five years, DES will survey a large swath of the southern sky out to vast distances in order to provide new clues to this most fundamental of questions.

The world's most sensitive digital camera has begun peering into deep space, and the barred spiral galaxy NGC 1365 looks to be staring right back. Some 60 million light-years from Earth, NGC 1365 stars among the first pictures from the new 570-megapixel Dark Energy Camera, released Tuesday.

Five-Year Hunt for Mysterious Dark Energy Begins

By Megan Gannon, News Editor | September 17, 2013 07:00am ET

.... The five-year Dark Energy Survey (DES for short) officially began after sunset on Aug. 31, 2013. Its main instrument is the 570-megapixel Dark Energy Camera at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in the Andes Mountains in Chile.

Though scientists think dark energy comprises 74 percent of the universe, they do not fully understand what it is. Dark energy, for now, is the name given to the force that seems to be working against gravity, causing the expansion of the universe to speed up instead of slow down. 'Dark matter' isn't a 'thing'.

It is purely a mathematical fudge to keep a bull**** theory in play.
