UM-Bot Posted December 24, 2013 #1 Share Posted December 24, 2013 Elysium Space is taking orders to have the remains of the deceased sent up in to Earth's orbit. A new start-up company called Elysium Space is offering 'space burial' services for as little as $2000 with reservations currently booking for the first flight next year. Due to launch from Cape Canaveral in Florida, the "memorial spaceflight" will carry the ashes of the deceased and give mourners the chance to track its progress with a mobile phone app. Read More: http://www.unexplain...urials-in-space
Ashyne Posted December 24, 2013 #2 Share Posted December 24, 2013 Why only launch the capsule to Earth orbit? Why not launch it into outer space and hope that one day it will drift and land on the Moon or Mars or some celestial body? Maybe it might even drift out of the solar system! Eldorado Posted December 24, 2013 #3 Share Posted December 24, 2013 From Elysium website: "How much cremated remains should I provide? The kit includes a mini-scoop to easily transfer a symbolic portion of the remains to the ash capsule. The capsule contains about a dozen of mini-scoops. The total weight depends on the density of the remains and can theoretically be up to a gram. The capsule dimensions are 0.4 x 0.4 x 0.4 inches." moonshadow60 Posted December 24, 2013 #4 Share Posted December 24, 2013 Makes me shudder to think that not only will our planet be surrounded by space junk, some of it will be human now.
Bendy Demon Posted December 24, 2013 #5 Share Posted December 24, 2013 Makes me shudder to think that not only will our planet be surrounded by space junk, some of it will be human now. That is exactly what I was thinking. It's bad enough that we have all this space trash in orbit, posing a huge danger to any shuttle missions as well as the space station but now they have to dodge space coffins.
Lava_Lady Posted December 24, 2013 #6 Share Posted December 24, 2013 I want all of my ashes sent beyond orbit in a capsule that explodes to release every particle into the vast emptiness that is space. No body to bury, no ashes to scatter on earth.
TheGreatBeliever Posted December 25, 2013 #7 Share Posted December 25, 2013 (edited) Hmm... wonder if our bodies could be preserved in space like cryonics.. Edited December 25, 2013 by TheGreatBeliever

Why not launch it into outer space and hope that one day it will drift and land on the Moon or Mars or some celestial body? Maybe it might even drift out of the solar system! Energy. However much energy you need to get into Earth orbit, you need about 40% more to reach Earth escape velocity. The amount to leave the Solar System altogether is much much more. And as for landing on the Moon or Mars - well on the Moon you'll make a nice little crater, while at Mars you'll burn up in its atmosphere.
