Waspie_Dwarf Posted January 9, 2014 #1 Share Posted January 9, 2014 (edited) Dead Star and Distant Black Holes Dazzle in X-Rays Two new views from NASA's Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array, or NuSTAR, showcase the telescope's talent for spying objects near and far. One image shows the energized remains of a dead star, a structure nicknamed the "Hand of God" after its resemblance to a hand. Another image shows distant black holes buried in blankets of dust."NuSTAR's unique viewpoint, in seeing the highest-energy X-rays, is showing us well-studied objects and regions in a whole new light," said Fiona Harrison, the mission's principal investigator at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, Calif. gantonio45 Posted January 10, 2014 #2 Share Posted January 10, 2014 This is awesome! Any time they get new data on how black holes operate I am very intrigued. Just imagine for a moment that you are able to remove yourself from our own time/space, and imagine that you had the ability to observe a star as it dies; or observe the very beginnings of a black hole forming! Amazing to think about how all these things come to be.
Still Waters Posted January 10, 2014 #3 Share Posted January 10, 2014 A new image of the pulsar wind nebula known as the 'Hand of God' has been captured by US space agency Nasa's Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR). The photograph captured by the telescope shows the nebula 17,000 light-years away, which is powered by a dead, spinning star called PSR B1509-58. The pulsar itself is just 19 kilometres long, but spins around nearly seven times every second. http://www.independe...sa-9051605.html
moonshadow60 Posted January 11, 2014 #4 Share Posted January 11, 2014 Oh, it's beautiful. It does look like a huge hand throwing a ball of fire, doesn't it, if you look at it just right. I know it's only pareidolia, like seeing Jesus on a piece of toast, but it really is something wonderful to see.
