Still Waters Posted January 12, 2014 #1 Share Posted January 12, 2014 British criminals convicted at the Old Bailey in the 18th and 19th Centuries were either jailed, transported to Australia or hanged. Researchers are now examining whether jail or transportation was more effective at preventing reoffending. http://www.bbc.co.uk...london-25487329

spud the mackem Posted January 12, 2014 #3 Share Posted January 12, 2014 Makes you wonder which would be more effective today. I've been to Oz, but not jail, so that's a very hard question to answer.

IBelieveWhatIWant Posted January 12, 2014 #5 Share Posted January 12, 2014 World's most poisonous snakes, spiders and jellyfish. Kangaroos that have six packs, wombats that could gut you with 1 swipe and kookaburras that only seem to laugh when you make a mistake.... If I was in England back then I would 100% take jail but here I am stuck in good ol' Aussie.

IBelieveWhatIWant Posted January 13, 2014 #9 Share Posted January 13, 2014 That's why they swim so fast and get all the medals at the Olympics.. Didn't you know that while training the trainers throw baby great whites, barracudas and box jellyfish into the pool, it's much more effective and safe than trying to find all 3 of those in the same spot in the ocean. Honestly I thought this was common knowledge.

PersonFromPorlock Posted January 13, 2014 #11 Share Posted January 13, 2014 IIRC, in British jails they also prayed - at length - over the convicts. That'd be a tie-breaker for me.

Honestly I thought this was common knowledge. I'll never forget swimming at Cronulla beach one day , out along way , when the shark siren went off .... I swear I would have beaten Michaael Phelps over that last 200 meters back to the shore ....

zebra99 Posted January 14, 2014 #14 Share Posted January 14, 2014 This is a page of court records for my home town...The only place for these desperate criminals was a penal colony the other side of the world. After all stealing bones,a pig or two spoons would have meant a hanging a few years before.

Popular Post Ealdwita Posted July 4, 2014 Popular Post #17 Share Posted July 4, 2014 (edited) Takes me back many years to when I was considering emigration to Australia.......I had to attend an interview which was going quite well until we got to the question...."Do you have a criminal record, sir?" To which I replied..."I didn't think I still needed one." No sense of humour, Aussies! Edited July 4, 2014 by ealdwita

Crabby Kitten Posted July 5, 2014 #22 Share Posted July 5, 2014 Many people died on the way to Australia with outbreaks of diseases. Even once they were in Oz people were badly treated. It wasn't just convincts that went there but also soldiers and prison guards, with their families.
Still Waters Posted July 5, 2014 Author #23 Share Posted July 5, 2014 Takes me back many years to when I was considering emigration to Australia..... We almost did when I was a kid. My parents had it all arranged and we were ready to go, then as the time got nearer they had second thoughts for various reasons and ended up changing their minds. We had relatives who had already gone there and the idea was to join them.
