Has the rover caught a UFO on Mars?

Mars in the news again today, seems a blob/streak in the sky has sparked the UFO people into action!!

Meteor?

Has Nasa's Curiosity rover spotted a UFO on MARS? Rover images reveals conical object streaking through the sky

* Image taken by the Curiosity rover on the Martian surface

* Shows white streaking object in the air which appears to have a conical shape and vapour trail

'Enlargement of the object reveals a spherical top cone, a rounded center mass and what looks like some kind of propellant ejecting from its tail,' the Bublews site claims.

I'm bein' a bit lazy here, as it's past my bedtime.. But to proceed we will need to go back to the original highest resolution image. Then we need to apply genuine (not amateurish guaranteed-artefact-inducing-enlarge-the-bejeebers-out-of-it) techniques to truly and properly analyse the image. That would be a NON-interpolating enlargement that shows the pixels as they ARE, not as some interpolation routine makes up guessed fake ones.. Then I'd want to see the images immediately before and after that one, if any..

But I'm too sleepy.. G'nite all..

I thought NASA covered up all evidence of ufos? Not very good at it are they?

Hard to tell what this is till we get some enhancement

I wrote this before Seeder posted the update,I still can't hazard a guess

Just goes to show doesn't it, that even on Mars - UFO's choose to use their blurring technology so earthmans cameras just see.. a blurry something :tu:

I know I was never very good at those hidden image things but seriously, I see a 'streak' where the heck is the '...spherical top cone, a rounded center mass and what looks like some kind of propellant ejecting from its tail'. Some people have all the luck and see what they want to see.

its still a JPEG seeder ... I don;t think there will be image RAW extensions available for the public ...

Ah OK, Im no image expert at all. I found that link under one of the youtube versions of that vid, (not the version posted). I think the link text made me think it was raw as seen below

~link snip

Nahhhh .. no big deal ... many in a DTP studios still trips up on that especially those app oriented folks ... here the ' /msl-raw-images/ ' is a directory of folder convention and just means images as from source prior to DTP formatting (such as cropping, resizing or scaling If required)

RAW extensions are usually referred to as 'master copies' and most unlikely to be shared out ~

Keep in mind, we have Mars Odyssey, Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter and Mars Express currently in orbit.

A logical, rational thought? You obviously have no business posting here.

Here is the RAW one:

Next thing important to need to know is the exposure time of that pic.

Interesting, I'd like to see the RAW. Anyone know the shutter speed for this image?

Boringly, a meteor, possibly motion blurred, seems to be the most likely explanation.

Edit: OK, here's an enlargement from the RAW.

To find a pic the SOL (Solar day) number is required, this number is always mentioned in the pic filename/pic link,

here marked in red:

http:// mars.jpl.nasa.gov/msl-raw-images/proj/msl/redops/ods/surface/sol/00504/opgs/edr/fcam/FRB_442238851EDR_

F0250066FHAZ00216M_.JPG

For the search use the last 4 digits only, means 0504.

Go to : http://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/

>search section

> key into : 0504 images

The file codes are containing a lot of informations like the name of the rover, date/time of exposure, cam in use and others,

look here for the "how to decode filenames" : http://marsrover.nas...lename_key.html

On the contrary, even the original data file (probably a FITS file or similar raw file that requires processing in order to be viewed) will also be available from the archives - as toast showed, you just need to do some homework..

Right now I have to work...I'll be back later. Note that the enlargements being shown here are INTERPOLATED, whether or not they are from the uncompressed original raw file. That's NOT how you analyse data!!!! If you're not seeing hard edged square pixels, you *are* seeing FALSE data.

That second image looks like a data glitch (cosmic ray hit or data transmission error) or an overloaded couple of pixels (possibly from a glint of something - there are shiny things on Mars, some of which we bright with us!) that have bled into neighboring pixels.

In the meantime, we should put a call out to pericynthion - he's the guy!!

If you "see" in the picture "what looks like some kind of propellant ejecting from its tail" then I would argue it is not an alien spaceship. Would not an alien space craft have advanced propulsion systems where propellant would not be ejecting? I seriously doubt aliens are "rocketing" all over the universe. Therefore, if you believe this object is a space craft of some sort (as "some kind of propellant" is being ejected...) it is obviously something Earth-made; especially as we have many things orbiting Mars.
