"Sleep "Epidemic" - is how doctors - perplexed - are calling a strange disease that spread among the villagers of Kalachi (or Kalachev, a small city) - Akmola region, Kazakhstan. ...The complaints relate symptoms such as weakness, malaise, fainting, partial memory loss, and in the worst cases, even hallucinations.

Hope Yakimova, residing in the village said: People are falling sleeping suddenly, anywhere. Sometimes, some of them, in the same moment, near one of other, standing or sitting.

You would think they would look at the environment aka: water source. Also, if this is for real it seems to be affecting their brain - they need to look at that too.

Kalachi is a small village right next to mostly abandoned mining town of Krasnogorsky. They mined uranium until 30 years back. All checks for radiation or any toxic substances have been negative, and if there was a problem with the water, then it would also be shown in the towns downstream of Kalachi, and there are no problems reported. There are some unkind comments in Russian speaking media about this mystery, and all say almost the same thing. It is a dump and it's not necessary to wake up.....

KAZAHKSTAN - Sleep syndrome update: two more cases

KAZAHKSTAN. Two more people have been hospitalized at Kalachi village with sleep syndrome symptoms... On February 20, a 53 y.o man and a 33 y.o woman were hospitalized to the Esil District Hospital. The new cases of sleep syndrome have a mild form: while patients are feeling dizzy and sleepy they have no hallucinations and loss of memory.

... Scientists from Semey and Eastern Kazakhstan oblast Radiology and Ecology Research Centers and the Karaganda Hygiene and Occupational Diseases Research Center are still struggling to explain what is causing the syndrome. So far they have identified only one clear pattern. The symptoms manifest themselves only during thawing weather and sudden warnings. This doesn't help much, though.
