seeder Posted February 13, 2014 #1 Share Posted February 13, 2014 Well, heres a good example of bees adapting to the environment... Urban bees are using PLASTIC to build hives - and it could stop parasites from infecting their nests * Researchers from Guelph University studied bee nest boxes in Toronto * They discovered mysterious 'goo' in the nests of two leafcutter species * Analysis found this substance was a type of plastic sealant * Evidence of small pieces of plastic bags were also found in other nests * In both cases, larvae successfully developed and were free from parasites * Study claims the plastic could actually make the nests more secure http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2557881/Urban-bees-using-PLASTIC-build-hives.html#ixzz2tCeitzQT

mysticwerewolf Posted February 17, 2014 #10 Share Posted February 17, 2014 (edited) Don't honey bees eat honey? yes honey bees eat honey not plastic,( they also eat pollen and in some cases depending on the species even meat. ) but they don't have hands and use their mouths to build their hives... honey bees usually use wax that is secreated from glands on their backs, while boring bees actually use their mouths to drill holes in rotten wood. if they've found a way to adapt plastic to a building material more power to them. and if they can get rid of the mites that are killing them even better they sure look like honey bees but from the article I think that they are related closer to a mason bee or wood boring bee than a honey bee Edited February 17, 2014 by mysticwerewolf
