Right, but it might resemble an unknown pathogen that harms humans. All of the known pathogens were unknown before they were discovered. The chance of finding a "normal sized" virus in an ice core would seem remote at best. Let's hope they don't revive smallpox or some virulent strain of influenza, remote as that chance might be. U.S has some frozen cells and so does Russia Understood, but it's been decades since vaccinations for smallpox were given and should it appear again, say from the permafrost, you would have a huge problem before sufficient vaccine could be produced, especially with the threat of spread from air travel. I'm not too keen on Russia and the U.S. keeping this virus either, even for "research" purposes. Either he needed that explained to him and decided to share his new discovery, or assumes a very low IQ among his readers. oy We live with undiscovered threats everyday. I'm personally much more concerned with viruses that are sitting frozen in military laboratories. Eventually something is going to go wrong. Murphy's law demands it. Look at all the care we humans have put into containing the hazardous potential of enriching heavy elements like uranium. Without rereading the article I believe this was a mimivirus which, if memory serves, only attack amoeba. There are many viruses that are host specific so it's probably not a big deal and I doubt amoeba have changed all that much in 30,000 years and it's quite possible that this virus was already "alive" and well somewhere infecting them, just perhaps rare and undiscovered. Kinda reminds me of a book I read a few years ago, something about a virus that was hidden under the ice I think in Antarctica.
